1979 Lloyds Bank Masters
I was wondering if anyone could provide me with a full table of results from the 1979 Lloyds Bank Masters , which took place at the Ivanhoe Hotel from 22-30 August.
As an aide-memoire, here is a summary of the leading scores from the SCCU Bulletin, September 1979:
1-3 MG Chandler (NZ), A Haik (France), H Westerinen (Finland) 7/9, 4 B Jansson (Sweden) 6½; 5-14 GS Botterill (Wales), M Petursson (Iceland), V Ravikumar (India), D Friedgood (Charlton), S Knott (Hammersmith and Cambridge Univ), DJ King, (age 16, Bromley), AP Law (Acton), PE Littlewood (Daventry and Skelmersdale), S. Odendahl (USA), CS Crouch (Harrow and Cambridge Univ) 6... 94 played. Murray Chandler won the Lloyds Bank Trophy on tie-break.
I've looked in BCM and CHESS but they don't have any more than the above. Ideally I would like a scan of a full crosstable of results of all 94 players. It may have been published in the 1980/81 BCF Yearbook (I don't have a copy).
I'm not at this stage looking for more game scores (I have 183 of them) but I'd really like a complete list of names so I can proofread the game file properly and then publish on BritBase.
(I'm a bit surprised I don't already have either the relevant yearbook or the tournament bulletin but a hunt through my archive was unsuccessful.)

Re: 1979 Lloyds Bank Masters
Curiously, the 1979/80 Yearbook gives the top few places of the 1978 Lloyds Bank Masters, while the 1980/81 Yearbook gives the top few placed of the 1980 Lloyds Bank Masters.
Perhaps I'm not looking in the right place, but I can't yet find the 1979 results in either Yearbook. If they were available, I guess it would only be the first few places. I may possibly have a copy of the tournament bulletin somewhere: I'll have a look

Would it be in Informator ( which I don't have )?

Only slightly more results than given above:
15-19: Kraidman, Watson, Hawksworth, Kinlay, Van Dijk 5.5, etc.

Re: 1979 Lloyds Bank Masters
I know the compilations of tournament results by Gino di Felice have in some circles a reputation for poor accuracy (at least I hope I am remembering that correctly! - EDIT: I was, see here), but the 1979 Lloyds Bank Masters is listed there, at least in the 2016 edition of Chess Competitions, 1971-2010 (the index says see page 1591). Or page 161 of the shorter work Chess Results, 1978-1980 from 2014. It might be a starting point at least.
Sets of the 1978 and 1979 bulletins appear to be available for £7 from Glynn's Books:
https://www.antiqbook.com/search.php?ac ... %20-%20All
(you have to search that page, I can't link direct - bit annoying that the 1978 bulletin has games missing due to a misprint!)

Re: 1979 Lloyds Bank Masters
I was able to read the relevant page of Chess Results in a quick online search - it appears to have the same results as Informator (i.e. stopping at 19th position). It sources the results to BCM so I think that branch of the search gets circular at this point..!Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 1:09 pmOr page 161 of the shorter work Chess Results, 1978-1980 from 2014. Re: 1979 Lloyds Bank Masters
Thanks for all the responses so far, much appreciated. I'm really after a full crosstable of results that was likely to be included in the tournament bulletin. I've also emailed the man who won the tournament, Murray Chandler, if perchance he has a copy - maybe framed on the wall of his trophy room!

Re: 1979 Lloyds Bank Masters
I'm glad to report that the search has concluded successfully. Catherine Glynn of Glynn's Books kindly sent me scans of the 1979 Lloyds Bank Masters crosstable from the bulletin and that is exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to transcribe it and place it on a BritBase page in due course. Many thanks to all those who checked their chess libraries on my behalf - much appreciated.

Re: 1979 Lloyds Bank Masters
Thank you for that John. Is your coverage of the Lloyds Bank Masters mostly or nearly complete now?
The cross-table (containing as it would some of the leading-lights-to-be of British chess) makes interesting reading, and I love the BCM report you've included from George Botterill! (bonus points for using the words 'bruited' and 'abreactive' - the latter in a paragraph containing the phrase "your mind may start to go basmanic too"...)

That last one is interesting (he now lives in Ukraine).

Apparently Kraidman was the first Jew born in Israel to become a GM.

(Was Géza Füster the oldest player there?)
Sadly (including some of the above), also a reminder of those no longer with us, such as Colin Crouch and Andrew Law:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/che ... bered.html
From the latter (by Malcolm Pein): "I readily recall being outplayed by him in a rook and pawn endgame at the Lloyds Bank tournament in 1979" (that is in round 6, Malcolm was White and it is game 105 in the Britbase collection for this tournament - just played through it, it is quite interesting with some nice little tactical points).
Nice photos as well. Wonder if the demonstration board kid watching Haik playing Botterill in the final round carried on playing chess?
Some of the names are less familiar to me (Clive Hill, Michael Ashley Pagden). I wonder if anyone reading this has any anecdotes about the tournament to add to what is already published about this tournament?

That prompted me to look up some of these players (on Wikipedia):Come the last round, Westerinen is half a point ahead. He is playing against the Swedish policeman Borje Jansson. Jansson had told me that he was ‘only over here for a holiday’. But he has been playing with massive solidity and it is no surprise when their game is a short draw.

Re: 1979 Lloyds Bank Masters
He might well have been. Looking down the list, it's difficult to see many who would have been leading players ten years earlier, There's Franklin, Botterill and Basman, even the latter two would still have been under 35.
