Sharon Furlong

Post by Kevin Thurlow » Fri Mar 05, 2021 4:54 pm

Sharon Furlong played in Manchester area and was Civil Service Ladies Champion in 1970 and 1976. I note that I have a maiden name for her of either "Walls" or "Wallis". If anyone can say which is right, I would be grateful. (If you say it's a completely different name, I will be puzzled...)

There is a "Sharon Furlong Trophy" awarded at Blackpool Chess Conference.
Somebody in Lancashire Chess Association may have more information.

Married to the late Peter Furlong, of course.

Had a bad car accident in the late 1980s and never really recovered, though she lived for some time afterwards.

It indeed is one and the same.

I have now been told by a very helpful person that the maiden name was Walls. She died in 1995, so only early 40s, very sad.

From what I heard, she only recovered at all in the sense that she didn't die immediately, and her subsequent passing was a merciful release. A sad case indeed.
