East London Jewish Cemetery?

Post by John Upham » Mon Feb 22, 2021 12:04 pm

In the 1954 BCM obituary by DJ Morgan of Jacques Mieses he states that Mieses was buried in the East London Jewish Cemetery.

According to

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_ce ... ondon_area

there is no place with that exact name.

The closest match is

The East Ham Jewish Cemetery.

Can you help?

I have surprised myself!

Jacques was buried at the East Ham Jewish Cemetery on February 25th 1954

I telephoned them and they were extremely helpful.

The location is Section J, Row 18 and Grave 1100.

This has been added to my photographic hit list for the Spring / Summer whenever the weather become pleasant. :D

I hope to find more significant chess persons at the same cemetery.

Horatio Caro is another one but I'm sure there will be more.

The East Ham Jewish Cemetery is also known as "Marlow Road Jewish Cemetery"

Indeed.

I used Gordon Cadden's photograph of the marker in
