Ray Keene with the first edition of "Flank Openings" would be in with a shout.

Flank Openings was originally published by British Chess Magazine in 1967.

RDK was in his first year at Trinity College so I assume it was written in the gap between Dulwich College and Trinity and Ray would have been 18-19 when it was written / published.

So, RDK was my thought. Any other suggestions?

Neil,

I guess you are referring to

"Development of a Grandmaster" first published by Pergamon Chess in 1991.

Michael would have been aged 19/20 when it was published so its a close call but I think RDK was younger by more or less one year.

Good shout however!

My attention has been drawn (by James Pratt) to CN 662 from EG Winter :
Bob Meadley informs us that Murray Chandler (born 4th April 1960) brought out "A White Pawn in Europe" in 1975, giving his games at the World Junior Championship in Yugoslavia and English tourneys August- November 1975
which would make MG 15 or so at the time. :D

I had never seen (or even heard) of this book before JDP mentioned it to me.

I will email MG to enquire further.

Meanwhile...

But I think he was still a kiwi at that time, so I'm not sure how that would qualify.

The wording of the question is "Who was the youngest (to become titled) British chess player to author a physical chess book that was published?"

Change the wording slightly to "Who was the youngest (to become titled British) chess player to author a physical chess book that was published?"

... and Chandler would qualify.

Yes agreed...could also throw in blonde, so who was the youngest blonde (to become titled British) antipodean duffel coat wearing chess player to author a physical chess book without the use of spectacles, which was then published.

And which sire of Lincolnshire, self-titled player, celebrated & well-loved author once began a column with the sentence 'All tournament controllers, like grouse, were born to be shot at' in the very same decade as Murray's publication?

And I am indebted to Damian Lemos, who informs us that Daniel Naroditsky (USA) wrote his first chess book aged 14. DN is an engaging presenter of ichess courses. I know he's not British, but it's quite interesting.

I am going out on a limb here but would suggest

Geoffrey Harber Diggle aka 'Badmaster'.

I fully expect to be shot down in flames.

It was him alright, and perhaps uncoincidentally, the funniest man to have written about chess (methinks).
