It's Only Me! : Remembering Tony Miles (23-iv-1955 12-xi-2001)
We remember possibly England's most loved and one of its most innovative players with a huge number of words and photographs. Some of the latter almost certainly have not seen the light of day previously.

In the Miles-Tatai photo, what's in the jars?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I asked Phil Lynott and Gary Moore and they told me whiskey...
More seriously I would suggest cow's milk.
Tony was famous for consuming milk at the board. This led to a quip from Nigel Short during their Master Game encounter.

I doubt that Gary Moore mentioned this to you - his relatively short time with Thin Lizzy was after they recorded "Whiskey in the Jar".John Upham wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 10:56 am

One of the occasions where I am lost in admiration for the depth of someone's knowledge!

Good try but Gary Moore - Whiskey in the Jar (Tribute to Phil Lynott) [HQ] [9/10] might help you to reconsider

We've gone off at a terrible tangent here from the subject matter; Gary Moore (now sadly deceased as well) sung this at a remembrance concert in 2005 - some 19 years after Phil Lynott's death see https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2981510/. Tony, Phil and indeed Gary were taken from us far too early - they live on in their respective spheres.John Upham wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 2:17 pmNeil Graham wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 2:00 pmI doubt that Gary Moore mentioned this to you - his relatively short time with Thin Lizzy was after they recorded "Whiskey in the Jar".John Upham wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 10:56 am

I didn't say that I spoke to Phil and Gary at the same time.Neil Graham wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 2:35 pm

However, as you say, it would be much better to talk about Tony....

Quite a compliment from Mikhail Shereshevsky in Endgame Strategy. There are 3 of Miles' endgames in the book. The endgame play of grandmaster Miles is characterized by unhurried manoeuvring and the painstaking accumulation of small advantages, according to all the demands of the principle "do not hurry". But when his advantage attains decisive dimensions, the English player is transformed, and he uses all his tactical skill to reach his goal by the shortest path, although quieter, more lengthy roads might be found. A player from the past who acted in this manner was the outstanding Russian Champion Alexander Alekhine.
