Harry Golombek games

Post by Simon Rogers » Tue Apr 28, 2020 4:09 pm

Hi all. I attended Denis Lane's funeral back on the 10th March which was mentioned in Deaths & Obituaries.
At the gathering after there was a picture of Denis Lane welcoming British Champion Harry Golombek to Blackpool Chess Club. The picture was in the Blackpool Gazette possibly 1955. Has anyone got any interesting games of Harry's.

On chessgames.com you will find 509 of his games. At the start there is a notable list. That is free,

Chessbase costs money. It has 894 of his games.

Thank you Stewart. Although regrettably I can't afford Chessbase. I only have a mobile phone. Which is where I send my posts to the forum from.

I don't know whether you can get on chess.com via your mobile phone.
You could also go to an internet cafe and go online to access his games.
As far as I know, there is no published collection of Harry's games.

There is an interesting game annotated in

https://britishchessnews.com/2020/01/07 ... 07-i-1995/

There are more games of HGs in Britbase not present in MegaBase 2020.

Golombek's book "The Game of Chess" was my first chess book. I expect many players of a similar vintage may say the same.

Golombek had this fine win against Pachman at the Reti Memorial (Trencianske Teplice, 1949). Black overreaches trying to establish a knight on d3, and falls to a counter-attack in the centre. If the one-sided snuffing-out of H Brown the same year could make the list of notable games, then this one certainly should. That list was probably compiled before I submitted the game a few years ago, and not been updated since.

The Right Way to Play Chess by David Brine Pritchard was my first chess book found in the family library and read several times.

Does this predate "Teach Yourself Chess" ( the first edition, not the Hartston one ), which I remember finding in our bookcase?

And there was also B H Wood's "Easy Guide To Chess" - came across the 1960s edition in someone's living room just recently.

You could still find the Pritchard book in Waterstones recently (when we were allowed out). I wish I'd asked him to sign my copy when I played him.

Note what Barry Wood did in 1944
Had a full time job as a laboratory chemist
published Chess Magazine monthly
Brought up 4 children, albeit with his wife
wrote Easy Guide to Chess
