Sounds good to me, it won't happen though I am afraidPeter Rhodes wrote:From an amateurs point of view (!), it would be nice if officers seeking election had an opportunity to submit an online prospectus indicating where they stand on various issues, how they intend to carry out their agenda, and most importantly, their track record and achievments to date within their chosen field of specialism or career.
With some of the rather extraordinary failures, is it not right to question the ability of a candidate to undertake the role they seek election for ?

Hard to see anyone stopping Gerry getting himself re-elected in the FIDE role?John Philpott wrote:The fact that Nigel Short's name does not currently appear on the list of "other nominations" on the website is purely down to a senior moment on the part of the Chairman of the Governance Committee. Nigel has, of course, been well and truly nominated. This oversight will be corrected in the morning.
There are still 13 hours and 24 minutes for further nominations if anybody feels up to the challenge (and can find support from "the requisitionists").

Any candidate, whether new or an incumbent, is entitled to have an election address not exceeding one side of A4 circulated with the Council papers. Depending upon how successful I am with getting supporting papers as well as the Agenda posted, these may or may not appear on the ECF website. There is, of course, nothing to prevent the sheet of A4 specifying an external website address where the candidate can provide much more information than can be fitted onto the sheet.it would be nice if officers seeking election had an opportunity to submit an online prospectus

Re: ECF officers
The time has now come for all of us to lobby our ECF Council delegates. We have some great new faces to elect and we must make our utmost effort to give them the best possible chance.
We must find out who the carriers of the largest blocks of proxy votes are. It would be a disaster if GFW carries on his influence such that we remain locked in the dark ages. Its now up to YOU : find out who your ECF delegate is, pick up the telephone and talk to them.

Re: ECF officers
These elections are jolly good fun, but then three most important posts in the ECF (in terms of governance) are
Office Manager
Finance Director
CEO
None of these posts are facing an election, so I would suggest whoever you vote for it won't make a lot of difference - SORRY

Re: ECF officers
At the AGM is there not a record made of who votes for who or is it simply a show of hands?Ernie Lazenby wrote:Big problem though is this: How does anyone know if their representative at the meeting actually votes in accordance with how the members they represent directed. As I understand it the reps could vote as they personally want to without any regard to their members wishes and no one can prove otherwise because of the card vote system. Is this correct.
Anyone know?

This will, of course, vary from meeting to meeting depending upon who is actually attending. I posted information on proxies on this Forum from last year's AGM, which somebody may be able to turn up. My recollection is that easily the most significant number of proxy votes was held by John Turnock, and that Gerry Walsh had a negligible number of undirected proxies (directed proxies are technically given to the Chairman of the meeting but he has no discretion in how they are exercised). We must find out who the carriers of the largest blocks of proxy votes are.

Re: ECF officers
If the following posts were up for election how would you vote?
ECF Office Manager
ECF Manager of Rating & Grading
You could either vote for the incumbent or vote for "Any other candidate if there was a choice"
I thought that the CEO post was due to be elected but that CM would not stand if he felt that the Chess Sets for School project was not successful.
I assume, therefore, that the CsfS project IS successful and that CM will be deservedly re-elected.

From a governance point of view should this level of information be out in the open then John do you think?John Philpott wrote:Most votes are taken on a show of hands, and are clear cut with the number of votes recorded against in the minutes. Your definition of scalar is too narrow. Rating clearly indicates some experience of playing chess in addition to the skill level. Two pieces of information are enough to upgrade it to a vector.John Upham wrote:A rating is only a scalar quantity with no direction.

Re: ECF officers
Provide the direction(s) of a rating and I will willingly upgrade it from a scalar to a vector quantity : Until then it remains correctly described.

Your definition of a vector as haivng magnitude and direction is too year 9 ! A vector does not have to be a physical vector such as a velocity but can be any two or more numbers which measure items. Surely you have come across the concept in computer programming.John Upham wrote:Provide the direction(s) of a rating and I will willingly upgrade it from a scalar to a vector quantity : Until then it remains correctly described.
Perhaps you were making the point that a lack of direction might be considered an advantage in this election contest.

Re: ECF officers
Slightly off topic here, but the ECF have confirmed my appointment as Publicity Officer Pretty certain I've listed my contact details on page 3 of this thread, and if anyone's got any suggestions for how to get some publicity for chess (aside from getting one of our top players to turn up for a game inebriated ) I'd be delighted to hear it.
