Chess Sponsorship

Post by Neill Cooper » Sat Jan 24, 2009 8:36 am

My suggestion for finding sponsors is to look for any company or organisation using chess for advertising (it is used surprisingly often) and then contact them saying "I see you value chess, would you like to sponsor ..."

Never Mind The Buzzcocks had a giant knight on it once, (the idea was to pair the item with the celebrity, and Dane Bowers, whoever he is :P , was the correct answer) and Alesha Dixon knew what it was!

So pester the BBC for a bit...?
To Drink or not to Drink, that is the question.

Exactly - I've read ads today in New Model Adviser magazine from
http://www.cofunds.co.uk/platform
and http://www.bnymellonam.co.uk/incomematters
both with 4 large chess pieces

As a bonus, many finance firms actually employ chess players
Any postings on here represent my personal views

There is a problem with approaching companies who are using chess imagery for their advertisements. This is that, by the time we see the ads, the budget has already been spent and the strategy already determined.
We need to be in contact with the advertising companies before they finalise their plans. A truly professional sponsorship finder might manage to achieve that for us. But we have never had such a person working with British chess.
Of course the current financial crisis is against all sponsorships. Personally I believe sponsorship is a superior way of advertising one's wares than actually paying for advertising in the media, but I am biased. I don't read ads or watch them on TV.

Must be someone in advertising playing chess - and reading this forum!
