Having just started playing OTB again, I've reregistered as an ECF member and was quite surprised now to be given three gender options:

male / female / non-binary

To whoever instigated that change: Thank you very much. Having to acquiesce to an obligatory "M" always annoyed me.

NB duly ticked :)

I have never seen the point of the "M" option, which confers no advantages. I think there should just be an "F" box, which can be ticked by anyone who wishes to be identified as female.

Also, I noticed previously.
Board meeting minutes, 21 May 2021 wrote:9. Developing an ECF Trans Policy (AM)
AM explained that there had been an inquiry by a trans person asking if they could join female tournaments. AM requested that AM and CF be approved to formulate a policy on this. The Board agreed that they should draft a policy and bring it to the Board for approval. AP144/04 AM and CF to develop an ECF trans policy and bring to the Board.

Unless things have changed recently, the British Junior Championships have Boys Champions and Girls Champions, with the Overall Champions being the higher scoring of the two.

I presume that only those with the "M" option selected are eligible to become Boys Champions.

How many have actually identified as NB so far?

The ECF membership list of 21 Oct has gender:
F - 577;
M - 7534; and
undefined - 21.

The ECF supporter list of 21 Oct has gender:
F - 56;
M - 229; and
undefined - 1.

So, no NBs yet but hopefully that will change shortly.

That might have made sense before the addition of the non-binary option. I'm not sure it does now.

I know I've updated my gender on there to say NB. Don't know how many other people have.

After reading the above, I wondered whether FIDE had already developed a policy but, as far as I can see, it hasn't. The USCF however appears to have adopted the following policy in 2018: "The Executive Board moves to adopt the following transgender policy as provided by legal counsel: Allow a person to identify as they choose, and allow each person one change to their gender identification. If an individual attempts a second change to gender identification, at that time the individual must provide US Chess a birth certificate, and the birth gender indicated on the birth certificate will be used to determine gender for US Chess purposes". That's presumably to accord with US law which won't necessarily coincide with UK law.

I know what he was referring to, that wasn't my question though

You are correct. I hope we shall do that, but it has at least been noticed, unlike in some other organisations, that allowing male players simply to redefine themselves as female has wider implications.
