As you rightly say, I am still a Board Member until the 2021 AGM
This being so, should you be discussing the contents of intra-Board communications on here?
I have only alluded to a public, although formal and Official ECF Regulation No 4 Standards of Conduct Complaint

I am not in the habit of calling other Board members a liar in written communications within the Board.

Chris

No, it's revealing or describing part of a communication.

"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

and also to give her time to "shadow" me for a year and to learn about the role and to help me in decision making as well as to attend Board meetings -this is positive and proactive succession planning and is a widespread practice in the "outside world" but as far as I know is the first time it has ever been done in the ECF.
In the earlier days of the ECF, perhaps ten years ago or more, it had been common practice to appoint alternate directors. I can recall Lawrence Cooper shadowing Stewart Reuben as International Director, Alex H shadowing Adam Raoof as Home Director, Andrew Farthing shadowing Chris Meier as CEO and perhaps others. There was some story that a quasi-official body, possibly the Charities Commission, disapproved of the practice for voluntary organisations, and it fell into abeyance.

That's not quite correct.

My understanding is that charities cannot have alternates. At the time you mention, there was a plan to seek charitable status for the bulk of the ECF, so the practice of appointing Alternate Directors was dropped in anticipation.

The thinking changed about charitable status, but there was no further appointment of an Alternate Director prior to Agnieszka Milewska's appointment as Chris Fegan's alternate.

Another earlier example is that David Welch was Peter Purland's alternate as Junior Director.

But David Welch was for all practical purposes the same person as Peter Purland!

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Mike Truran is the best person for the job!

I agree. The eternal political manoeuvreings rumble on. But regardless of any personal misgivings people may have towards Mike, from my perspective he has done a remarkably professional and competent job.
To actively seek his removal is the kind of act of self harm English chess seems to enjoy performing on itself, but based on what he's actually done it's preposterous.

Any more Nicks want to weigh in to defend the righteous?

Seriously though, this type of thread is becoming depressingly familiar.

I often get called Nick, rather than Mick, so I'll happily add that I agree Mike should be re-elected

Time for a new President I think, but I expect there's no appetite for that

Who do you think could do better at the job's primary responsibilities of:

Ambassador of the ECF to represent it:
  • At important public events
  • To other important organisations
  • To politicians and other distinguished persons
  • To sponsors and donors
  • To the media where appropriate

I'm not sure if you were asking regarding a specific person or 'who' in more general terms but fwiw,

Dominic Lawson is obviously a prominent figure with connections in the media which has its obvious advantages.

Against that, over a period of several years he has failed to notice the structural disadvantages in access to chess that stare him in the face. In fact, he has stated outright that they don't exist.

I would prefer the EC President not to be a White Bloke Says There Is No Discrimination In A Game That Is Dominated By White Blokes kind of chap ... but like Mick, I doubt there will be much enthusiasm for a change

"As this statement seems on the face of it absurd..."

I wonder whether that was the best approach if you really wished to elicit a serious response.

Well it wasn't written in the expectation of a response, if that's what you mean.

I very much doubt it's based on what he's actually done.

But you did choose to add

"(No reply received by time of publication)"

which is a bit disingenuous if you phrased your question so as not to get one. Had you asked your question in a more neutral tone you might well have got one.
