Re: Is Positive Change Coming To English Chess?
Well, I guess there's never been a better time to say "I asked you first".
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I long ago came to the conclusion that he must be an escaped character from that old TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" - he never looks in the mirror.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Well that was a constructive comment.

It's OK, one more petty and petulant old fool on this website doesn't make a great deal of difference in the overall scale of things

Is that comment criticism or abuse. I wouldn't wish to fall into the error of eliding the two.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 3:54 pmIt's OK, one more petty and petulant old fool on this website doesn't make a great deal of difference in the overall scale of things

Perhaps you will have to be the arbiter of that

If you try to remember the difference, I shall judge whether you have got it right.
Incidentally, that website is a bit out of date. Phil Chambers retired from his position a couple of years ago.

And good judgment is certainly your forte.

I think it's fairly easy to identify the candidate with the greatest chance of ousting Mike Truran. Whether he will stand is another matter. With many feeling that Mike has done a good job as CEO and that the challenge was opportunistic, any successful candidate looks likely to find himself the ruler of a divided kingdom. That's rarely a good starting position.John Reyes wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 10:13 am
You need to think why is someone standing against Mike as CEO?
Alex has mentioned he has done a good role as CEO, however there are people who seems to have issues with him personal.
Also would someone stand against Mike and then if get elected, would stand down and bring someone else in?
Also paul you mentioned Malcolm but he is the current international director and also our fide delegate, would he have to resign before standing as director before he stood, but I would be asking why he is standing? For getting rid of Mike because he don’t like him?
Also if someone stands against him who would be the candidates?
Tim Wall?
Chris Fegan? (He is stepping down as woman director and I’m thinking aga will become the new director)
Someone from the CSC?

Copy of my comment on chess.com Alan Kennedy
Dear Tim
Like Andy Howie above, I do not recognise your description of Mike Truran or the ECF support for local leagues. We used the ECF software for running the Oxfordshire chess associaton online tournament and was extremey grateful for the use of this software - it is difficult to see what else they good have done. I also organised Zoom rooms for all of the Witney chess club members so they could chat to each other. I did not see any need to involve the ECF in such initiative - it is not their role. Whenever i emailed any of the ECF board they were extremely helpful whether it was Nigel Towers or Malcolm Pein. When I made suggestions about their Covid risk assessments they took the suggestions to heart and amended their policy accordingly. I asked the members of Witney chess club if they wanted to play over the board, because of the average age many of them said no - they would wait till the disease was under control. That was not the fault of the ECF but a statement about the demographic of our club.
In terms of support for local chess you might like to look at the Witney chess club submission to become ECF club of the year in 2013 it shows what the club members think of Mike https://bit.ly/ecf2012coty (particularly pages 7 and 8 ) and also might like to see the first 3 minutes and 30 seconds of my video at the start of the pandemic https://bit.ly/2xU0QsN whcih describes Mike Truran's support the local chess. As I said it is not the same person you describe.
Tim, given you are on the same side as Mike Truran (you both want to see chess grow) I fail to see why you consider abusing Mike achieves that objective. Your understanding of procedure and company law leave a lot to be desired. The English Chess federation has a complaints policy that should be followed as this avoids the unseemly public squabbling that used to prevail during the time before Mike was appointed CEO. Did you follow it?
Mike acts on behalf of the board who follow a doctrine of collective responsibilty. It is not correct to say Mike controls the ECF or 4NCL. If you criticise him you criticise all members of the board.
I am delighted with your initiative to start outdoor chess - a brilliant idea - and i do not disagree with your suggestion that such initiatives should be encouraged - you might however have more success in achieving that objective if you used a diffeent more positive tone in the correspondence as suggested by Dale Carnegie in the book "how to win friends and influence people." Have you read this book and what did you think of it?
Alan
