New ECF Rating Database

Post by Peter Harrington » Sat Sep 12, 2020 11:01 am

What a shambles! Now I've no problem with moving to a 4-figure rating system but the presentation is shambolic. Do these computer nerds and web designers etc ever consider the users? You are presented with a black background and writing and symbols in various colours. What about users with any sort of sight defect? What about those people who are colour blind? Forget it if you want to print off any of the information contained therein. You will just get an almost black page and contents difficult to read. Caxton got it right, a white background and black writing. This is not progress, it's going back to the dark ages!

You can click on the ECF logo to change the colour scheme to something lighter.

Thanks, I'll try that or anything to improve the situation.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Here is what you should have written.

"Thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their evenings and weekends to make this migration possible, we all really appreciate your efforts over the last several months. I do have a minor request, however - would it be possible to have an alternative styling option - my eyes struggle to process light text on a dark background and I'm sure other users have the same problems.

Thanks again,

Peter"

Perhaps it depends on the browser, but "print preview" in Firefox showed a white background regardless.

I was just passing a critical eye over the presentation of the new ECF rating database.

I like the new Grading page it's pretty easy to use. I even like the background colour change option too.
Changing to four digit ratings was long overdue (IMHO) well done E.C.F.

The new site looks very good to me and the information provided and search facilities appear more extensive than those on the old Grading site. I wonder if there are any plans to allow users to make more complex searches? An example would be to find all players named Smith rated between 1600 and 1699 who have played more than 10 rated games in the last year.

New site is definitely an improvement over the old one. I do not know if you remember, with the old one navigation was really limited - if you clicked somewhere there was no way back... I only wish the rating graph was done using chart.js or something similar (like FIDE), but I guess that is probably planned for some of the future milestones...

Another thing I really like about the new website is that it is now easy to navigate through events, and see results of those matches. Really nice!!

What?

Movie quote, implying hard work is not an end in itself. I noticed both chess.com and chess24 advertising UX jobs earlier this year. Fingers crossed Peter applies, he seems like a natural.

Any idea which movie? Google is unforthcoming
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
