Women's championship starts tomorrow, not sure if we want a separate thread to discuss?

Very wide rating gap between numbers 1 and 10; not easy to do the draw either (bit like 4NCL Div 3N)
Thursday 14th October to Sunday 17th October at the Hull venue
7 rounds – Round 1 (Thursday 14th October) 4.00pm; Rounds 2-7 (Friday 15th October to Sunday 17th October) at 10.00am and 4.00pm

Was it qualifiers only, or like the Senior Championships open to all comers regardless of participation in the summer on-line tournaments ?

Assuming they use the pairing software out of the box, it will be a test as to whether it can cope with such an extreme case.

I think the entry was worded as titled players and qualifiers only. But we asked nicely and got a wild card entry as Niamh didn’t play in the British Online this year. It’s a very Covid safe event, so the low entries probably suits having lots of space. Looking at the University of Hull website they are still operating many virtual lessons and a lot of their facilities remain closed.

 may make the pairing even more complex

8 played in round 1 and 10 in round 2

Katarzyna Toma is the only player on 2/2

And she's now on 3/3. It's not often that someone beats two four-times champions in successive rounds.

They now play each other in the game which was supposed to decide the champion. Of course it still could, but it's nice that things aren't always predictable.

Katarzyna drew in round 4, where Harriet won

Well, if I've got this right, the round 6 pairings will look like this:

1. Singha (3) v Hunt (3½)
2. Subramanian (3) v Toma (3½)
3. Varney (3½) v Arakhamia-Grant (3)
4. Kueh (3) v Bridgeman (2)
5. Pyun (2) v Arora (1)
Hariharan (2) bye

And then the round 7 pairings will be absolutely ridiculous; there will be a full-point bye for someone who's already on 3/5.

Those are indeed the pairings, except that Arora is apparently defaulting against Pyun.

Pyun and Hariharan can't play, needless to say.

'tis unfortunate. Had Arora withdrawn before the draw was published, they could have paired Kueh against Hariharan and Pyun against Bridgeman, but hey ho.

Hunt wins with 5½
Toma second with 5
Arakhamia-Grant, Varney and Kueh equal third with 4½

Kueh's rating gain takes her to 2099, within touching distance of the WFM title.

Congratulations to Harriet. It's her 5th British women's title in total but her first since 1999. Commentators John Emms and Chris Ward were asking whether 22 years is a record gap between winning British titles and I think it probably is. Bob Wade and Hugh Alexander both had 18 year gaps between their two titles (1952 and 1970, and 1938 and 1956). Elaine Pritchard first won the women's title in 1939 and last in 1965 but had other title wins in between. Also, I'm not counting titles won in different competitions - thus, for example, Golombek, British title in 1955 and British Veterans title in 1984, doesn't count.)

Edith Price won the British Ladies in 1922,1923, 1924,1928 and 1948. A gap of twenty years.
When Miss Edith Price won it in 1948 she was 76 years of age.
Will Harriet be able to beat that record?
