Great Chris, now I have the mental image of Roger sharing the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award with Emma Raducanu. I might not be able to visit the forum for a while until it passes. But congratulations to Roger!Chris Rice wrote: ↑Sun Oct 10, 2021 1:15 pmBoard 2 was a draw so Roger is the 2021 British Over 65s Champion. Pretty good going having been seeded only 15th of the 21 players at the start. Must have been channelling his inner Emma Raducanu! Well done.Graham Borrowdale wrote: ↑Sun Oct 10, 2021 9:57 amYes, congratulations Roger, on at least 1st=.Nick Ivell wrote: ↑Sun Oct 10, 2021 9:02 amI will take this chance to say: nice game, Roger.
I always enjoy your (multitudinous) posts; good to see that you also know where the pieces belong!
Those of us who come from the same neck of the woods as Roger have been well aware of his abilities to grind out a result for a long time! I would go so far as to say that his playing style is as persistent as his posting style.

Re: British Championship Congress 2021
Nick Pert has drawn on board 1, and Andrew Ledger has lost on board 2, so the only player who can catch Nick is Mark Hebden, with his result against Keith Arkell not showing at the moment (presumably still playing?).
[Chessbomb showing the game as still going, looks exciting!]
EDIT: To be fair, it did look exciting at move 68! (68.Kg5).

Nick Pert wins with 6.5/9, half ahead of Gormally, Harvey, Hebden, Ledger & Olsen.

Hebden deserves a special award for effort anyway: 268 moves total trying to win his last three games.

Congratulations Nick Pert for a well deserved victory.
Overall I found the tournament very enjoyable - I'm glad we were able to have an in person tournament this year.
Fingers crossed my performance this year will qualify me for next year's British, if not then oh well I will qualify via next year's Major Open.

Talented Olga Latypova ( year of birth 2008 ) plaid 6 rounds with Rp 2123. Fingers cross to her, hope she top up her underestimated rating soon and see her in 4NCL 1st division .

Re: British Championship Congress 2021
It wasn't that amazing as I've previously beaten or drawn with all my opponents over the last fifty years or so. I had also shed around a hundred points playing juniors at Leamington and Gateshead this summer. I'm helping to widen the gap between FIDE Elo and ECF Elo by getting some points back off other seniors.
Starting in the third or fourth quartile is favourable for a decent rating performance as you don't play anyone rated well below your rating provided you start well.

Re: British Championship Congress 2021
Would have been an even better rating performance if Roger had not lost in the last round! Kudos to Roger and Phil Stimpson (who beat him) for not playing out a quick draw. Phil even got third place with that win. Congrats also to Ivan Myall for second place.
EDIT: Congrats also to all the other winners, such as Mike Waddington (Over 50), Women's Championship starts in a few days time. Not checked the junior results yet, any outstanding results there? (I did notice two children with the surname Pert! If I have this right, they are Richard Pert's children, and nephew and niece of the newly crowned champion.)

You can find a thread in the junior section, and the winner should be on the British website and on chess-results.Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 12:06 pm...
