First round pairings for the Championship. Putting the event on during term time has cut out a number of players who would have liked to play. No real out and out favourite here, though Nick Pert does look well placed but for many players this might be their best and perhaps only chance of winning it.

This does seem to have slipped under the radar, with the other contest rumbling on. It would seem to be between the top 6 or so, but, as ever, there could be surprises. My money would be on N Pert or Arkell.Chris Rice wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 11:50 pmFirst round pairings for the Championship. Out of interest, nearly all of the players seem to have higher ECF grades than FIDE - are they expected to become more closely aligned in time under the new system? They can’t all be improving juniors.

In all seriousness, you cannot rule out Freddy Gordon getting into the mix.Graham Borrowdale wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:15 amThis does seem to have slipped under the radar, with the other contest rumbling on. A shame that his title norm chances appear to have been dealt a severe blow in the round one pairings.Matthew Turner wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:35 am

Although I now see that he's not playing rounds eight and nine anywayLawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:40 amA shame that his title norm chances appear to have been dealt a severe blow in the round one pairings.Matthew Turner wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:35 am

I hope Hull/the ECF aren't losing (much) money on this. Very tough for organisers right now.
Whatever with 9 rounds and a field that small whoever wins it will have really earned it. It'll be almost an APA

I saw he had a bye in round 1, but I hadn't realised about 8 and 9, that could make things interesting if he goes on a run.LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:41 amAlthough I now see that he's not playing rounds eight and nine anywayLawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:40 amA shame that his title norm chances appear to have been dealt a severe blow in the round one pairings.Matthew Turner wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:35 am

Very off topic of course, but I don't see how it really can. Just look at the ECF <-> FIDE conversions for say Div 3 of the 4NCL.Graham Borrowdale wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:15 amOut of interest, nearly all of the players seem to have higher ECF grades than FIDE - are they expected to become more closely aligned in time under the new system? You'd have to somehow reset all the low level FIDE ratings in the country then find a way to FIDE rate many more games.

Why wouldn't the normal convention that byes in the last rounds are treated as withdrawals apply?Matthew Turner wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:47 amI saw he had a bye in round 1, but I hadn't realised about 8 and 9, that could make things interesting if he goes on a run.

I'm surprised he, and Latypova, have been allowed to play when they're not going to complete the event. The ECF/BCF used to take a dim view of people withdrawing from the British Championship part way through.LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:41 amAlthough I now see that he's not playing rounds eight and nine anywayLawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:40 amA shame that his title norm chances appear to have been dealt a severe blow in the round one pairings.Matthew Turner wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 10:35 am

Re: British Championship Congress 2021
Maybe this is different because their intentions are known before the tournament. If they are paying an entry fee that might also be much needed revenue. After today there should be an even number of players every day, unless, of course, there are any withdrawals!Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 11:04 amI'm surprised he, and Latypova, have been allowed to play when they're not going to complete the event. Re: British Championship Congress 2021
Except in the final rounds. I am not sure how wise it is for the tournament to permit a player to take part having declared they wont be playing a third of the games.
