Agreed, and I wonder if the 4NCL could do something similar with multiple smaller venues, not necessarily all on the same weekend? Again, not ideal, but better than nothing.Joseph Conlon wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 7:12 pmThe ECF have a post up saying that there will not be a large-scale OTB British in Torquay in summer 2021 but that there will be an OTB British championships, spread out in various ways, in October 2021.

To me they have got this perfectly right - with the best will in the world towards organising OTB chess at current times (and I am as keen on this as anyone) - a full-scale summer British is logistically unreasonable, in terms of risks and finances. On the other hand not running any form of OTB British Championships would seem defeatist

Yes although I seem to remember that was on an entirely separate island.

Re: British Championship Congress 2021
Hull has proved it can organise top quality events in big, nice, spacious venues in October, so it should be perfectly possible to crown British Champions in 2021, if so desired. The risk of a slimmed down invitational event is, for adults it will be expensive and for juniors it will be controversial. However, I certainly think this is worth the ECF considering. For the adults, a lot may depend on the views of Caplin and for the juniors, I wonder if the ECF will be keeping an eye on how things go with the U.K. Chess Challenge.Joseph Conlon wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 7:12 pmThe ECF have a post up saying that there will not be a large-scale OTB British in Torquay in summer 2021 but that there will be an OTB British championships, spread out in various ways, in October 2021.

Likewise with junior events, which - if necessary - could also operate on restricted entry.
None of this is ideal but half a loaf is better than no bread.

The 2005 British Chess Championships was held on the Isle of Man.
Since 1904, the British Chess Championships have not been held in Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Wight.

Or Gibraltar, or Falklands etc.
A friend in Guernsey was trying to set up a leisure centre/hotel on Alderney years ago in an old fort, which might just have been big enough. But the planners stopped him...

The owner of Wetherspoons, Tim Martin, lives in the Isles of Scilly, whether his mansion is big enough to hold it, that I don't know. Also I don't think there is currently any restrictions down there.

In response to posters who felt that the British Chess Championships took place too infrequently in their countries or regions, I wished merely to point out that - in one of the four countries of the United Kingdom, ie. Northern Ireland - they had never taken place.Simon Rogers wrote: ↑Tue Mar 09, 2021 9:54 amThe 2005 British Chess Championships was held on the Isle of Man.

Re: Briish Championship Congress 2021
The 2nd post in this thread shows the subject title had no 't' in British (see title at top of this post).Carl Hibbard wrote: ↑Tue Mar 09, 2021 10:33 amWhy are there two threads with the same name I am confused?
So the two threads were different.David Robertson wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 11:02 pmAnd it's still a...Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 9:06 pm...the one used when the Congress was last in Blackpool back in 1988
Somewhere along the line the 't' was put into "Briish" making the two thread titles the same.

They were started at different times, the first pre-lockdown. They may as well be merged if that's straightforward.Carl Hibbard wrote: ↑Tue Mar 09, 2021 10:33 amWhy are there two threads with the same name I am confused?

Jack Rudd usually acts as moderator but seems not to be about.
PS Spelling is going to pot on the forum these days probably due to lockdown fatigue.
