Should we ban the Kalashnikov Variation of the Sicilian Defence?
There are quite a few chess opening names that would appear "odd" to non players, when you think about it.......

Opening names are a problem, and frequently weird. After many years of being an authority on chemical names, I quite enjoy Caissic nomenclature. I recall a book on the Benoni, which said in the foreword that it meant "Son of Sorrow", unlike "Benjamin" which means "Son of Joy"(?)

John Saunders did a humorous annotation of one of my games, which started 1.c4, and he said (something like), "The English Opening. I am a patriotic man, but this smacks of nationalism of the worse kind."

Happily, hardly anyone plays the "Monkey's Bum" these days.

That's what wiki reckons, rather than it being something to do with the town in South Africa of that name.

Who didn't go to Sunday school?
... (2) yamin, "right hand," "right." The derived meaning, "south," seems to imply an eastern posture in prayer in which the right hand is toward the South; compare Arabic yamin, "right," and yemen, "Yemen," a region in Southwestern Arabia...

Benjamin -

From the Hebrew name ןיִמָיְנִּב (Binyamin) meaning "son of the south" or "son of the right hand", from the roots ןֵּב (ben) meaning "son" and ןיִמָי (yamin) meaning "right hand, south".

But some of us studied beyond Sunday School and consider all possiibiities:
Wikipaedia wrote:Unusually for one of the 12 tribes of Israel, the Bible does not explain the etymology of Benjamin's name. Medieval commentator Rashi gives two different explanations, based on Midrashic sources. "Son of the south", with south derived from the word for the right hand side, referring to the birth of Benjamin in Canaan, as compared with the birth of all the other sons of Jacob in Aram.[4][5] Modern scholars have proposed that "son of the south" / "right" is a reference to the tribe being subordinate to the more dominant tribe of Ephraim.[5] Alternatively, Rashi suggests it means "son of days", meaning a son born in Jacob's old age.

Thanks, Michael.

Hope you're not implying my education ceased at the age of about 10 years young, though.

Edit: to correct spelling.

A third round pairing in the UK Blitz tournament in Newcastle over the weekend that I didn't expect to see so soon!

Let's hope it wasn't a short, sharp needle match.

GM Danny Gormally won that Brit. Blitz qualifier in Newcastle with 14.5/15 and IM Lorin D'costa clear 2nd on 13/15...

London & Manchester qualifiers this coming Sat. 14th Sept.

No clues here: https://www.britishchesschampionships.c ... list-2019/ so maybe try contacting the manager of the British.

Just for completeness : No reply was received to my query so we have to assume that the Best Game Prize was not awarded for 2019.

I assume you didn't bother checking the link given by Lawrence Cooper again before posting.
