Got to be worth a try. Assuming the cost structure is essentially fixed, economics would suggest that you might as well try price reductions in areas where there is no demand at the moment - so slashing the prices for FMs is risking very little for the possibility of strengthening the event a bit.

I'm not sure Hawkins has any advantage at all (after 33... Ke7).

edit: although 34...Rb4 looks a bit optimistic. 34... Nf8 was natural when 35. Rcd1 can be answered comfortably with 35... Rb6.

Boards 2 and 3 stuck? They were both shaping up to be interesting games :/

If the top 5 boards are drawn, who would Hawkins play in round 8? It would one one of Emms, N. Pert, Hebden, Ward and Howell. Presumably a White seeker from that lot (Hebden or Howell). Though if Emms wins and the others draw, you have to presumably give Emms Black (rather than a third White in a row) and Hawkins would get White.

White does look very passive on board 1. I'd prefer to be Black here. Wish we knew if there had been any draw offers.

Surprised Hebden didn't play 41...Ne1+. Seems very ambitious to be playing for more then a draw.

Engines now favouring Fernandez, if he can find the right moves. Hebden may have missed the tactics after 43.Ra5, meaning that the Ne1+ move is no longer possible. And, oops, Ward has gone wrong (blundered was too harsh) on board 2 against Howell (amazingly, Ward has less time than Howell!).
