I'm away filming at the moment but will be back next week.

I've got a meeting with Evan Harris MP on 2nd March and a couple of exciting initiatives have been proposed (details later when I'm home) which could prove very interesting.

I've been invited to the World Snooker Championships in April (the only sport I like) and will be filming a snooker quiz between myself and some of the players (busy revising already!)

In both this and an interview in the official programme I'll be mentioning chess and the ECF wherever appropriate so hopefully this will be a bit of national television exposure.

Last year (ish), they had a Snooker Mastermind thing, with the commentators answering questions about their own playing careers. They were hopeless...

And what is the overall score in matches between Hendry and White at the Crucible?

Oh lordy, I wasn't expecting a test...

Okay, I can only recall three 18-17 matches (Taylor-Davis, Hendry-White and Ebdon-Hendry) I don't think there have been any others as it wasn't too long ago that the knockout tournament came into effect.

The player that came closest to retaining...Joe Johnson is the obvious one but there may be another.

As for the scores between Hendry and White...eep. H beat W in 4 finals and I seem to remember W beating H in a first round match. However, there may have been others but I really don't know so I'll stick at 4-1.

Any good? (I promise I'll be studying hard though!)

It's always been knockout, apart from one year when it was in Australia. They played 4 random others in a group of 9, with the top 4 playing in Semis and a Final. It was only a 35-frame final since about 1980 though.

He lost 18-14 to Davis in 1987, you're right. Ken Doherty lost 18-12 in 1998 to John Higgins, he was next closest.

Hendry beat White in the 1995 Semi Final 16-12, but I don't know whether they played pre-1990. So it's at least 5-1 to Hendry.

Most one sided scoreline? Well, there's only ever been 1 whitewash which was 10-0 between Parrott and Mountjoy (can't remember the year though...maybe 1992?) so I assume that's the one.

First Canadian? Don't know but out of the big 3 (Thorburn, Stevens and Werbeniuk) I'd guess at Bill Werbeniuk

1973 quarter final? Don't know this at all I'm afraid.

In modern times, yes, but in 1930something, Joe Davis beat William Withers of Wales 30-1 (Withers had just beaten Joe's brother Fred 17-14 in the first round). The match was best-of-31, and all frames were played. The match was won at 16-0, I believe.

The 10-0 was between Parrott and an ageing Eddie Charlton in 1992.

In the modern era, yes, but Conrad Stanbury played in several pre-war Championships, with little success.

Edit: Actually, it appears to be Thorburn in the modern era. I'd have guessed Werbeniuk too...

Rain stopped play! There was a leak in the roof, and it had to be plugged before they could continue. News crews went down to cover it, apparently.

White beat Hendry 13-12 in the second round in 1988, just before Hendry broke into the very top. So White won whenever they met before the semis, but unfortunately the converse was also true ....

I think there has been (at least) another 18-17 very recently, perhaps when Shaun Murphy won? Unfortunately I specialise in "late twentieth century" snooker, so am not sure about this.

In 2005, Murphy beat Matthew Stevens 18-16. Stevens led 10-6 overnight, and became the first player to lose from such a big lead overnight in the modern era. (Stevens also led Mark Williams 13-7 when he lost 18-16 to him in the 2000 Final.)

Eddie Charlton lost 31-30 to Ray Reardon in 1975's Final. Charlton led 29-23 on the final afternoon, but ended up losing. It was the last time the tournament was played in Australia, too. Charlton lost in three World Snooker Championship finals, and four World Billiards Championship finals, and didn't win one of them. And we think Jimmy White was unlucky...

The only other match that looks like it had a final frame decider was 1940, where Joe beat Fred 37-36, but Joe actually won the match 37-35, and the dead frame was played.

Recently there was an excellent show on BBC4, how to win at chess which you can watch online on BBC iplayer at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... _at_Chess/. Now would be a great time to lobby the BBC and other TV channels to get further success on the back of this. I suspect you will have many TV contacts from your eggheads participation, if not I have a contact e-mail in the BBC you could use which can be seen on the facebook group below.
