Can we please get a statement from someone at the ECF detailing how many schools have now received their free sets with the deadline now approaching?

The Chess for Schools project has reached another milestone with its move into East Sussex. A total of 134 schools in the county have now received their 10 free chess sets – the most in any county so far. To mark the occasion, Michael Foster – MP for Hastings and Rye – personally delivered a box of 10 chess sets to Redlake Community Primary School in Hastings and Rye College in Rye.
Chess for Schools is a nationwide charitable initiative that aims to deliver 10 free chess sets to every one of England’s 25,000 schools, in an effort to promote strategic thinking, brain games and the creation of school chess clubs and inter-school chess tournaments.
“East Sussex is another great milestone to reach along this ambitious path,†says Henning von Spreckelsen, executive chairman of Holloid Plastics. “And gaining local MP support is testament to the positive nature and importance of this project to the future of the nation’s children. Let’s just see if the next county Chess for Schools goes into is even bigger.â€The Chess for Schools boxes, which each contain 10 free chess sets, were distributed to the 134 schools using East Sussex’s Local Education Authority (LEA).
Chess for Schools is an ongoing programme with nearly 8,000 schools signed up to the first phase. Distribution is being handled in a phased national roll out programme. In addition to East Sussex, schools across Surrey, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Oxfordshire have also received sets.
Holloid Plastics, one of the country’s leading plastic injection moulding specialists, teamed up with the English Chess Federation (ECF) to create Chess for Schools. Holloid is making all of the 250,000 chess sets needed to complete the project as part of its 2009 – 2012 charity programme.
