I recently watched the 1966 Thunderbirds Movie. Brains playing (I say Virgil wife says Scoot) at chess.

Ray Hackenbacker (aka Brains) is playing Virgil Tracy (Thunderbird 2 pilot) named after Virgil (aka Gus) Grissom who died in Apollo 1 with Roger Chaffee and Ed White.

One which shows various minorities playing chess.
Are Jews a "minority". I suspect they are not, but have never understood why.

NICK >Are Jews a "minority". I suspect they are not, but have never understood why.<
Of course we are a very small minority when measured against the entire population. But, when I lived in NY, 25% of the population were Jewish, among chess players it was more like 50%.
In chess, until recently the percentage of Jewish player was high. That is to do with culture. The percentage has decreased in the chess world because of the growth in numbers of Chinese and Indian players. The percentage of black chess players is low. Again, that is because of cultural differences.

According to Wikipedia, the world has 2.4 billion Christians, 1.9 billion Moslems, 1.2 billion Hindus - and 15 million (0.015 billion) Jews.

Doesn't that answer your question?

Edit: I see that Stewart has made similar points.

Another point. There was no place in the recent census to indicate Jewish ethnicity. That may be because there are so few of us in the British Isles. Or, it may be because w are not a separate homogenous group. e.g. in my family we now have an Ethiopian.
