I would agree with on principle, but in practice I just don't see that the ECF as it's currently constructed is ever going to be able to put together something like this. It needs funding, admin support ... dedicated professional staff.

In an ideal world the ECF could do also sorts of things for all sorts of people at every level of chess. I suspect in the world we actually have, though, the ECF might be better off with a "doing fewer things well" approach.

I agree, I was approaching this more from the perspective that teams badged as England might usefully have the blessing of the National Federation. In this case the International Director is taking charge anyway albeit wearing another hat. I can see that in itself is a difficult debate as we cannot obviously claim the selection process has produced a representative team.

It happens to some extent, e.g. ECF recognizes that EFCC selects "England" teams for Correspondence Chess, and runs CC England Championships. It is more of a problem with junior events, where parents (not surprisingly) don't know the difference between offical and unofficial organizations.

Sorry but this thread quotes football pundits opining that certain games resemble chess with ennui-inducing repetition.

Would certainly be interested in any chess metaphors used for yesterday's big PL game

On PopMaster Radio 2 this morning (Scott Mills sitting in for Ken Bruce)

Scott (to 2nd contestant) : "What do you do for a living?"
Contestant " I work in a factory making chess pieces"
Scott "Are you at work today?"
Contestant "No this week I'm working on nights"

Even as I type this someone has texted/e-mailed Scott to point this out!

Not sure Harika Dronvalli's really known for her gambit play but the media, in this case the Indian newspaper Hindustan Times seem to use the Queen's Gambit for anything chess related these days. I'm not complaining, it's good to see and it's a very interesting article.
