"Chess tournament players burn up to 6,000 calories a day"
For amateurs, tournaments could well be fattening on balance. All that eating (and drinking) out.
Certainly not the healthiest food as a rule, either.

"Chess tournament players burn up to 6,000 calories a day"
The weight loss and calorie estimate sounds like total nonsense. Nobody is dropping 10 pounds of body fat in the space of a single modern day tournament. Mainly fluff will be going, some dehydration and a small amount of body fat loss but more likely muscle wastage from being in a deficit from not eating enough food, and being sat at a table not exercising. Basically what happens in the first week people go on diets.
I guess intense chess is worth around 100 calories extra burn a hour, which might be enough to push people on a maintenance diet into a small daily deficit of 400 plus calories. The 6000 calorie figure must be total nonsense. It would suggest every top chess player would be starving to death unless they had the calorific intake of a Tour De France cyclist! (They do actually average a 5000 calorie burn per stage, and eat 6000 calories a day.)
Presumably this would mean if chess players weren’t eating double the food of what most normal athletes consume they would be barely functioning let alone able to play top class chess. It’s just not very plausible.

Looking closer I feel sure we've discussed this story before, except maybe under the heading Fabiano Caruana
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

This isn't a new piece, but I came across it on social media just at the end of last week I'm not sure why (I can see a release date of 18 August 2021 on the first Google page when I search for the title, but it's not clear what this refers to). Anyway despite its title I am unconvinced it possesses any actual chess content, though by the same token the reason for the title is unclear!

"Mr Kibble's planning, as intricate and precise as a well-played game of chess, was nearly derailed once he left Northampton."

I'm not sure I'd trust too many chess players to catch the right bus, let alone a series of them. Not sure about the use of "derailed" either...

Nevertheless, his planning does sound immaculate.

Aylesbury bus station is certainly depressing - but Aylesbury is not somewhere you would travel through at 130mph on a train.

Not until HS2 arrives, anyway......

Indeed. HS preparatory works made a bit of a mess of my Sunday stroll. The Council map of enforced closures and diversions hasn't kept pace with whats happening on the ground. :( The land that has been fenced off is considerable.

Impossible BBC1 2.30pm until 3.15pm
Gameshow presented by Rick Edwards.
In today's repeated episode, in the final round, there was this question.
"In a standard game of chess, at the start, how many knights are there?"
It was answered correctly by one of the final three contestants.

I've been listening to Dylan for more than thirty years and yet for some reason it was only when I heard Chrissie Hynde's version of Love Minus Zero/No Limit on the radio this morning that I took any notice of the couplet
In ceremonies of the horsemen
Even the pawn must hold a grudge.

GET OUT 2017 film. About 25 minutes in. Speaking about Ju Jitsu, 'It's a strategic game, like chess'.
