Why are we worried what people call Baron Renfrew (my old home town!) or the Duke of Rothesay as he is formally known north of the border?

Not found the actual videos yet. There has been no let up for the remaining Ukrainian forces in Mariupol, with Russia continuing its bombardment of the steelworks where they are holed up. Video purportedly from inside showed men checking their phones and playing chess.

Encouraged by the response to the first video, they have released a version nearly five times as long: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rD-XFcmvGucRoland Kensdale wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 5:10 pmNike 50th anniversary video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=K0EfCKHpe0Q
Seems they have quite a neat mate from an actual game. After an earlier clip of the winner announcing check, they show an irrelevant clip of a rook move elsewhere. Probably the editor forgot to run the final video past their chess consultant.
The final comment: 'Its all about the shoes'

I think it was shot in Washington Park in Manhattan, an utterly iconic chess setting.

Hi Stewart,
Chess in Princes Street Gardens, (Thursday and Sunday from 2pm - clock and sets provided) is also very iconic
Taken today, about 30 bods turned up. Wonderful day (I won more than I lost.)

Geoff - definition ionic - very famous or popular, especially being considered to represent particular opinions or a particular time:
How often is chess played in Princes Street Gardens? It is a very nice photo and a very nice setting. Scotland has good reason to be proud of Edinburgh Chess Club, along with Hastings, 3Cs and the new club in Hammersmith. But chess in Washington Square Park appears many times in ads and films and written material.
NEW YORK CITY› ATTRACTION
Washington Square Park
At the southern end of Fifth Ave (where it intersects Waverly Place, btw. MacDougal and Wooster Sts.).

Our Rating 2 star rating Neighborhood Greenwich Village Transportation Subway
Entertaining as well are the intense chess matches played in Washington Square Park from noon to sundown on the southwest corner of the park (the regulars are real sharks).

Hi Stewart,
' But chess in Washington Square Park appears many times in ads and films and written material.'
That ad was filmed in a studio and the backdrop added with television trickery so it does not count.
Chess in the shadow of the castle with the Ross Fountain a few feet away playing a refreshing water tune. Bliss.
(what is it about the sound of rippling water that calms, cools and inspires...maybe in a previous life I was a fish...a clown fish!).
The lad I'm playing, a new friend, a student who is going to do some research for me at the Uni library.
Which is another great thing about playing chess 'anywhere.' You meet like minded people.
Back on thread topic.

were approached by a Russian spy who was given the code name 'The Chess Player.'

Why not? I gave my definition, from a dictionary, of iconic. It did not include, most beautiful, or most authentic.
We have probably exhausted this thread about the meaning of one particular word.
By the way, I have a water-effect installation in my flat

Re: Media comments on chess
In Sidetracked by Henning Mankell , Wallander seeks advice from a journalist whose career went astray after a drink driving incident.
''His wife had left their childless marriage. He continued drinking but managed not to step too far over the line. He gave up his career in journalism and made a living setting chess problems for a number of newspapers. The only reason he hadn't drunk himself to death was that every day he forced himself to hold off on that first drink until he had devised at least one chess problem."
I have a feeling I've seen this somewhere before, but searching for Wallander here brings up a thread about CJ and Sheffield, and I've lost the link to the S&B blog list of literary references.

Not sure
Long time since I read the book or saw the Swedish or English TV adaptations, so it may have been years ago
