Re: Media comments on chess
Hi Roland,
Russel Hunter (Lonely) sometimes popped into Sandy Bells, he use to watch us play chess though he never played.
Occasionally we exchanged a few words in between blitz games when I was at the bar, I found him quite a nice man.
At the moment (the festival) Bells is studded with celebs. (I went to the Tim Vine show - brilliant.)

I used to be into wargamming and computing more than chess in my teenage yearsRoland Kensdale wrote: ↑Sun Aug 07, 2022 6:14 pmHotels.com advert showed 2 people playing in a lounge/lobby.
Expedia advert showed 2 people playing in a heated pool in (I think) an ice hotel.
A bit less current, a Callan episode from 1970 'The same trick twice', has the hero working through Golombek's 'Game of Chess'. They show the cover but not the board position. More often Callan got involved in wargames as the actor enjoyed these in real life - Edward Woodward (John Gielgud : 'His name sounds like a fart in a bathtub'.)
Anyone remember the mission impossible 1960s episode on chess grandmasters or the columbo episode of a grandmaster murderer.

The villain, a master thief, was GM was Nicholas Groat and he played against one of the M.I. team.AlanLlewellyn wrote: ↑Sun Aug 07, 2022 7:10 pmAnyone remember the mission impossible 1960s episode on chess...
The first game.
N.Groat - Team member wired to a computer.
The GM Groat discovers the computer (which was meant to happen as part of the plot) and plays it again.
The second game
N.Groat - the computer
"I am finished." moans Groat. "20 years I have studied the game and now I am beaten by a machine."

Re: Media comments on chess
I only know of the one, there could have been two.
In the one I mentioned the player was relaying the moves to a computer via a camera in her broach.
G.M. Groat was planning to steal one million in gold till Scholars Mate foiled him.

good thing he didnt know fools mate then the computer would have really been flummoxed, i mean 30 years of study of chess and he never came across scholars mate i guess they must have assumed no-one watching knew scholars mate or how basic it is.Geoff Chandler wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 1:13 amI only know of the one, there could have been two.

of course when truss takes over she will get rid of all the superfluous civil servants (like teachers, doctors, nurses, lecturers, police etc etc) and fund MI5 and MI6 to snoop and lockup dissidents (ie teenagers).

(from 'Tragically I was an Only Twin' - The Complete Peter Cook.)
Peter was writing about going to see a Man Utd v Spurs game when a Man Utd fan attacked him.
(it was apparently it was the Spurs rosette that attracted his attackers attention.)

Why would you need to move to London to notice that
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Possibly, he wanted to watch live football, and when he got to London that was a reason. If he had moved to Birmingham, he would have found another reason.

It doesn't mention chess at all. But if they are willing to have videogames in Commonwealth Games, then why not chess, Magic the Gathering, or sudoku ...?
