I imagine so
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Meanwhile this interview with the recently-retired footballer Esteban Granero describes him as a "talented chess player" which is pushing it.

Re: Media comments on chess
Chess in final of Spain's Got Talent. A masked player whose identity is hidden ("Rey Enigma") played Karpov. 3 mins no increments. Karpov left opponent with just a king so that when Karpov's time ran out the result was a draw.
For some reason no English subtitles on the video I found ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dSHm2didVVM ) so much of the preamble and celebration at the result is unintelligible to me. One of the judges apparently may have been a player, holding up a a Chess book.
Karpov spoke in English other than "Tablas" at the end. ("Draw", explanation at https://spanishviaskype.com/chess-vocab ... n-spanish/ ).
You can't follow full game in above video, but
some cursory analysis at https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-pVcdcD5x5M (game score in description).

From the BBC:
5. Seven days of isolation
Photographer Richard Tymon and his family were holed up in a hotel room in Sweden after one of them tested positive for coronavirus. He decided to capture their seven days of isolation in which his wife Claire worked every day, and "playing chess, watching Christmas movies and card games all helped to pass the time".

THE MAIL ON SUNDAY (only just seen)
PETER HITCHENS. A Ukraine war is not our concern
Will there be war in Ukraine? It is an incredibly valuable piece of territory, a vital square on the Giant Chessboard of Europe.

The Reddit thread on this (which may be where Roland got this?) has a couple of suggestions as to El Rey's identity: Miguel Santos and Alvar Alonso Rosell. Another poster says that Pepe Cuenca (who leads Chess24's Spanish-language coverage) has played him and thinks he is a bit weaker than those players, maybe an IM or FM.Roland Kensdale wrote: ↑Tue Dec 21, 2021 5:04 pmChess in final of Spain's Got Talent. (According to this interview he says there are eight people in the world who know who he is.)

Re: Media comments on chess
What a clown, did he really think he could take down a world champion? Even a very out of practice Karpov was able to easily overcome him and had it been a proper tournament he would have been disqualified for multiple illegal moves made during the time scramble.Roland Kensdale wrote: ↑Tue Dec 21, 2021 5:04 pmChess in final of Spain's Got Talent. Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.
