"The film is based on a true story so that conversation mentioning Spassky could have really taken place. "
Even now, ask non-chess players to name players and they are most likely to mention Spassky and Fischer.

Hi Kevin,
I think you are right though a poll of non players I saw about 10 years ago had
Kasparov way out on top, I know Spassky was mentioned...but so was Deep Blue!
The film is based on a book by George Crile III (pub 2003) It's one to keep an eye out for
when I'm cruising the charity shops just to see if Spassky was mentioned,
Back then of course him and Fischer would have topped any poll with Karpov and Korchnoi up there as well.
(I'd let them off with the use of algebraic because the weapons expert was young and algebraic
was the in thing. But if he had been 40+....hmmmm...maybe in the book it's algebraic)
Just looked, E-Bay has a cheap copy £3.50 post free....but hold on...tomorrow is my birthday and I always get book tokens!!
I'll hit Waterstones. for a copy. (if it's on the shelf I just browse it...or rip out the relevant page )

You really need to stop doing that. It will get you a questionable reputation.

Fischer yes, but I would think Kasparov is better known to the hoi polloi than Spassky these days.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Wed Jun 29, 2022 4:56 pm"The film is based on a true story so that conversation mentioning Spassky could have really taken place. "

Some older non-players might still mention Capablanca, he really did achieve lasting fame outside chess like few others.

Re: Media comments on chess
I have been watching a lot of the Wimbledon tennis. I was rather surprised that no commentator had said, It's like game of chess'.
No fear though. It was said about one of the Ladiess singles semi-final today. By the way, they make the iabolic error of referring to the men's singles.

This Sunday Times article, which I cannot see, apparently reports that Tom Tugendhat would be Garry Kasparov's choice for UK Prime Minister.
Oh well, I wouldn't have been supporting him anyway.

Nick, you seem to be a paid-up member of the Conservative party.
Tom Tugendhat has joint British and French Citizenship. Would we really want him as our PM?

Sunday evening, ITV, "McDonald and Dodds" police drama, "Clouds Across The Moon", had a reasonably subtle chess theme, which might explain why the opening credits have a couple of chess pieces appearing briefly. The series is normally set in Bath, but this one ventured to Glastonbury as well.

That is a remarkable leap of imagination. Are there any other insights you would like to share?Stewart Reuben wrote: ↑Sun Jul 10, 2022 11:46 pmNick, you seem to be a paid-up member of the Conservative party.

Nick. 10 July you posted Oh well, I wouldn't have been supporting him anyway.
Since you are not an mp, you would only have been able to support him, or anybody else, if he reached the last two AND you are a member of the conservative party.
Alant Lewellyn. Just in case, you do realise we have two other female labour mps? Angela and Maria Eagle who are twins and previous high ranking members of the Labour party when it was in power.
