There is a precedent for a Russian competitor being personally punished for supporting government policies. Gymnast Ivan Kuliak is facing a disciplinary hearing for wearing a “Z” symbol on the podium next to a Ukrainian competitor, and chess player Sergey Karjakin was suspended for six months on Monday for social media posts with strident support for Putin and Russian troops.

Having been forced to read Tim Marshall's book, The Power of Geography I was wading through his leaden prose thinking it couldn't get any worse, when I came across this...
In chess terms, the king will still be the USA, and the queen will be the USA’s foreign policy as it moves around the board. Britain can be a knight, capable of making its own moves, but major British decisions will have to be referred to the king and queen to see how they fit with America’s game strategy.

The Chase today, about 20 minutes into the programme - "How many white squares are empty at the start of a game of chess?". The contestant said 32. :(

From an announcement on Radio Three just now I gather this programme at ten tonight is going to include "chess-playing Turks" among its subjects
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

So did I! Bradley Walsh rather garbled the question, and I missed the word 'empty'.

Private Eye 1570 in "Mali Watch" says, "The global chess game Vladimir Putin is playing extends far beyond Ukraine, whose invasion may be as much about gauging how his opponents might retaliate to his move as about crushing Ukraine into submission to recreate 'Novorossiya'."

Chess on Soccer AM this morning! A segment on awkward handshakes features two players, who I don’t recognise, at the 2021 FIDE World Cup greeting each other with an inadvertent best-of-three game of rock, paper, scissors (minus the scissors) before settling on paper versus paper. I‘ve played this myself on more than a lot of occasions recently, but I haven’t got up to three yet.

And as its Soccer AM, a visual joke is followed by a verbal one. “My nephew works in a factory making chess pieces. He’s on (k)nights this week!”

LE TOURNOI a 2015 French film.
I watched this yesterday on the way back from Abu Dhabi. It is about the 22 year old French Chess Champion, Michaelangelo Passanti, who is playing in a tournament in Budapest. He is challenged by an 8 year old wunderkind. Directed by Delodie Namer. They play without increments and it is difficult to follow the games.
I hadn't heard of it before yesterday. Nick Faulks didn't think highly of it. For a compulsive like me, it is required viewing.
It received a rave review on IMDB.
Brief clip from this movie

Today's "i" has a report (page 3) on Magnus Carlsen playing poker in the Norwegian Championship in Dublin (because of Norwegian gambling laws). It seems he was in 3rd place out of 167 players still in action at the end of day 2. They give a reasonable report on the chess part of his life.

Carlsen ends his great run in the Norwegian Poker Championship as number 25 (out of 1050 total), earns him a cash prize of around 5000 Euro-Twitter report.

What is the entry fee?

I note there is a series called YELLOWSTONE. It has been running for some years. I have no idea what channel this is on.
In their ad, there was a brief clip saying, 'This is chess and we are about to play with masters.
