Later in the same Private Eye, in Pseuds Corner (Pseuds is short for Pseudo-intellectual)

"To witness Bernardo Silva playing football is like watching a lovable field mouse win 25 games of simultaneous chess, while also defeating an army of orcs using only a tickle stick."

No it is not an oversimplification - as I wrote, it tends to be how young children play.

The latest Private Eye also carries a chess "funny" (bottom right corner of page 30) where it has "a chess grandmaster who is about to lose to an eight year old girl" - is this a reference to any actual chess event recently?

Bodhana Sivanandan beat an IM and drew with a GM in the recent European Blitz Championships:

I don't think she's beaten a GM yet.

Bit out-of-date, but I saw one the other day with its distinctive "checkmate" branding and wondered how rare this car model is?

The MINI Cooper S Checkmate.

Monday 15 January 7.30pm: MASTER MIND on BBC2, Specialist subjects include the Musical CHESS and Kim Philby.

In case anybody has forgotten, Bill Hartston was the original chess consultant for the original production which premiered in London in 1986.

Written in Tenerife.

Thanks Stewart.
I've just set my recorder for it.
I've got a league match tonight, home to Bare Village. New club that have joined the Blackpool & Fylde Chess League for the first time.

Well a new club in that sense, but they have been playing in the Lancaster league for donkey's years.

(were "Bare Institute" in the old days before going out of business for a few years in the mid-late 1980s, returning with their current name)

The village of Loose in Kent has (I believe) a branch of the Women's Institute, so I idly wonder if Bare does...

Yes, I believe so.
It's been all change in the Blackpool & Fylde League this season as regards to the structure.
Morecambe dropped out of the league completely and were replaced in Division 1 by Lancaster, who have rejoined.
Division 2 gained the newcomers of Bare Village (a suburb of Morecambe).
A new Division 3 was created due to Lytham, Leyland and Poulton-le-Fylde adding new teams to the League.
We also gained two new members tonight.
I'm afraid my team (Poulton 2) lost 3.5 to 0.5 to Phil Seery's Bare Village team. I drew with white against former Poulton-le-Fylde player Alan Giles.

Good to see that Phil is still going strong?

Presumably that Mr Giles is the same player I encountered back in the 1987/88 campaign in that league.

(which was my last season as a Lancaster player)

Simonn.
Could you please post the recording of MASTER MIND on BBC2, the Musical CHESS
It was the first item on the show. The very young-looking contestant did quite well in that section.
I only caught the lst fragment of the questions as I went to dinner here in Tenerife.
You could send it to me direct [email protected].

Thanks Ian. But that only works in the UK due to copyright.
