I bought a copy of this today and if I ever get round to reading it I'll let you know
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Incidentally this,

CSC organising an international team looks to be something that might more naturally fit the ECF ....
I would agree with on principle, but in practice I just don't see that the ECF as it's currently constructed is ever going to be able to put together something like this. It needs funding, admin support ... dedicated professional staff.
In an ideal world the ECF could do also sorts of things for all sorts of people at every level of chess. I suspect in the world we actually have, though, the ECF might be better off with a "doing fewer things well" approach.
I agree, I was approaching this more from the perspective that teams badged as England might usefully have the blessing of the National Federation. In this case the International Director is taking charge anyway albeit wearing another hat. I can see that in itself is a difficult debate as we cannot obviously claim the selection process has produced a representative team.

It happens to some extent, e.g. ECF recognizes that EFCC selects "England" teams for Correspondence Chess, and runs CC England Championships. It is more of a problem with junior events, where parents (not surprisingly) don't know the difference between offical and unofficial organizations.

Today's "i" reported this... (more or less word for word)

I know there's a Beckett thread somewhere here, but "media" covers it.

I haven't listened to this show so I can't tell you whether the chess in the image is matched by any actual chess content

There was a similar one, "like chess, both sides waiting for the other to move ". Have these people actually played chess?LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Sun Oct 24, 2021 3:17 pm"It is right tight and like a chess game. Who will make that first move?"
Right tight is good though.

Sorry but this thread quotes football pundits opining that certain games resemble chess with ennui-inducing repetition.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Sun Oct 24, 2021 10:59 pmThere was a similar one, "like chess, both sides waiting for the other to move ". I tend to agree, but think the two in the post you quote are a bit out of the ordinary.Roger Lancaster wrote: ↑Sun Oct 24, 2021 11:40 pmSorry but this thread quotes football pundits opining that certain games resemble chess with ennui-inducing repetition.

As opposed to the rest of the forum threads where ennui-inducing repetition is rarely seenRoger Lancaster wrote: ↑Sun Oct 24, 2021 11:40 pmSorry but this thread quotes football pundits opining that certain games resemble chess with ennui-inducing repetition.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Sun Oct 24, 2021 10:59 pmThere was a similar one, "like chess, both sides waiting for the other to move ". Would certainly be interested in any chess metaphors used for yesterday's big PL game

On PopMaster Radio 2 this morning (Scott Mills sitting in for Ken Bruce)
Scott (to 2nd contestant) : "What do you do for a living?"
Contestant " I work in a factory making chess pieces"
Scott "Are you at work today?"
Contestant "No this week I'm working on nights"
Even as I type this someone has texted/e-mailed Scott to point this out!

Not sure Harika Dronvalli's really known for her gambit play but the media, in this case the Indian newspaper Hindustan Times seem to use the Queen's Gambit for anything chess related these days. I'm not complaining, it's good to see and it's a very interesting article.
