[Stewart Reuben]George Szaszvari asks about women's chess in Hungary. Forget about that. Consider their strength in Polgaria.

Didn't ask, just said I didn't know (women's) and wasn't sure (men's)...

Basically the 3 sisters (they are Jewish) won the Gold medals in the Women's Olympiad with just the help of Ildiko Madl. They didn't often win because they didn't often bother to play.

I avoided mentioning the Polgars as "too obvious", since everyone in chess knows about the Polgar sisters and their
parents' nurture v nature experiment, don't they? Perhaps some newcomers to the game in the last 20 years, or so,
might not, I suppose.

It is puzzling that people are perfectly willing to accept genetic influence on all sorts of human conditions, but that so many people shy away from intelligence as possibly a characteristic that can be inherited.

Yes, very puzzling. How do such people explain inherited genes?

Richard Thursby wrote:The answer is rather in the article: the five players were born in the USSR, with three having been born in what is now Belarus. On ratings they would have taken three out of the top four places in the Belarus team.

Hence, with a team from the USSR, a country that dominated chess in the second half of the twentieth century, it is not necessarily so surprising that they did well.

Israel team being brought up is weird, the United States equally in there team because of the way the countries are.

Both are relatively "new" countries in worldwide scale. Well Belarus is even newer technically

I believe in 1990/1991 they had a law passed in "Sports" that any Jew can represent Israel, not sure what level you have to be(Grandparent I believe).

Belarus Jews clearly have the best genes for making great , wonderful humans and chess players.....

Clearly Israel punches above its weight on the chess scene.
It's also leading as regards to percentage of vaccinations done in the population, whether that means it will be one of the first countries to hold major OTB tournaments again. That I don't know.

So FIDE's boycott of countries that invade and occupy their neighbours didn't last long.

Perhaps it depends how recently they "invade and occupy," otherwise it would be difficult to find any country qualified to host a Fide event.

Excellent, let's incorporate that into international law and see how we get on. Your bids are invited as to how long needs to pass before an illegal occupation becomes legal or an annexation is accepted.

(Or we could just, you know, pack in the obfuscation.)

I think you will find that the occupying part of the crime is happening now.

Of course a lot of what Israel does is bad, but the status of the Palestinian territories is legally disputed. Which serves as a fig leaf for them.

It isn't really though is it: it just means some parties aren't accepting that international law applies to them (which is not perhaps uncommon, given current events).
