This phrase appears in a poem Chess Weekend, one of
three newly-published poems by John Redmond. Is the poet a
member of this forum?

Yes, the poet and the strong (2200+) chess player are one and the same. There's a photo of him at his website (
https://www.johnredmond.co.uk/) and I recognise him from when he played for South Wales Dragons in the 4NCL. He played for Oxford in the 1992 Varsity match and he is still an active player for Atticus in Liverpool.

I thought the collective term for chess players was 'a set of chess players.' it seems quite apt.

I always thought it was a fixation of chessplayers.

Google AI proposes a "board" of chess players, or a "brood". I think the latter is quite good.

When it comes to not buying their round an 'avoidance' of chess players may be appropriate for some. I believe this might also be a description used by the female of the species for the male player.
