Late BCM

Post by Paul Habershon » Sat May 03, 2025 7:16 am

I started subscribing to the magazines Chess in 1961 and British Chess Magazine in 1964. Both are monthly and the BCM has gradually been publishing later in the month. Yesterday May 2nd I received by post the April BCM and the May Chess.

When Chess was fortnightly I remember the editor B H Wood sometimes getting back on schedule with a 'bumper' monthly edition. I wonder if BCM will soon have to cover two months in one issue.

During my five year term (2010 - 2015) at BCM the above was a fairly common occurrence that caused friction between myself and the business owners, Stephen Lowe (who Bernard simply referred to as "Lowe" and other past editors who were less polite) and to a much less extent, IM Shaun Taulbut who has remained a friend to this day. Not only that, I was at the sharp end when dealing with customer and subscriber complaints.

Fair play to BCM: my May issue arrived 14th May, less than a fortnight after the April one.
