A pet hate with something to wile away what free time you may have.

Post by MJMcCready » Mon Dec 16, 2024 7:17 am

With some reluctance, since being shot down in flames is one of my pet hates, I have linked some quizzes I made based on a very popular, if not the most popular gameshow of the last twenty years or so. You know, the one GM James Plaskett did very well at once. I tweeked to ensure it chess questions only, and I suppose you could day that I pitched the difficulty of it on what reasonably informed or knoweldgeable club and county players may know, in their vastish understanding of our beatiful game.

If you do want to play them, let me know how you got on. More importantly, if there are any inaccuries -and I don't think they are as they were carefully constructed- do tell. Be a good egg and let me know. Lastly, the quiz comes first and then the answer are in the next post. Please scroll gently on them as you will see too many if you don't and that would spoil the whole thing.

Well do enjoy, be a good sport I did like the feedback I got when I posted some Kahoots on here a while back, and hopefully you will enjoy these. I like to do them, so if no one is really interested, that's fine also.

I only got as far as the first question before finding a mistake!
"Which piece sits aside both the king and queen at the start of the game?" should be "Which piece sits beside both the king and queen at the start of the game?"
The question is also ambiguous. I presume the answer is Pawn, although technically in chess that is not a piece, but an argument could be made for the answer being Bishop.
I may try question two later.

Pawns don't sit aside the king and queen, they are on a different rank. It's not ambiguous, there is only one answer.

I would say there is no such English usage as " ... aside the King and Queen ...". The word "aside" is an adverb, not a preposition. (In other contexts, it can also be a noun.)

It would be better if the correct answers were accompanied by a reference, or explanation, of why they are correct, or the other possibilities are wrong.

No. I mean on the answers page don't just say whatever the correct answer is, explain it. For example, for "How many non-european presidents has F.I.D.E had?" give a list of who they are, or a link to somewhere stating that.

Hmmm, okay I shall think about this. It's not in keeping with the format of WWTBAM but I could use footnotes yes.
