Time for Chess and Bridge to get themselves a new guru then ...
Here here! He doesn't know what he's talking about...

Check out JC's patch link - should take you to 21st Jan 2010.

If you're still having problems, let us know.
I'd be sceptical of anyone who claims that any software patch corrects all problems, all the more so with ChessBase software that shows plenty of signs of poor development standards and lack of version control. My previous post shows I was right to be.

I understand that he was misquoted - he actually said:
"Has he installed the latest patch? Because that solves a lot of problems"
and he never said the patch was avaiable on the site - though it is available via the link that James Coleman posted.

... and introduces at least 2 new problems, one of which is a serious one in my opinion.

The serious one is that the Integrity Checker tells me that every database I have has a faulty team index. This includes databases copied off ChessBase Magazine DVDs without changing them, and new databases created from scratch with games manually entered. So, most likely, its a fault with the Integrity Checker rather than the databases, but that then means that you won't know if a database really does have an error in it.

The less serious one is that if you convert a PGN database to CBH format and then look at the sources list the Publication Date and Date are both set to "CBDate::Null".

I have the installed the patch, and while I do get the pgn=>cbh error; I cannot replicate the integrity check error. So I don't see how that's caused by the patch.

Because it did not do this prior to installing the patch and it does do it after installing the patch. I was absolutely certain this is a new problem because I always run the integrity checker after updating a database. I have also proved this now by:

1. Re-installing the patch from 11 November 2009, when the problem does not occur.
2. Installing the patch from 21 January 2010 again, when the problem comes back again.

ChessBase patches are not robust. Previous discussions with their support people in Germany have already established that where a patch has a dependency on a particular version of a file already existing on your system, the patches do not always (and perhaps never) check that the correct version is present. So if I get the problem and you do not, the most likely explanation is that some file which the patch does not update is different on your system to mine.

Steffen Giehring of Chessbase contacted me and also advised to install SP3.

When I attempted to do so, the update was not successful and I was presented with a window that informed me "CB10 SP3 not installed".

It's taken me a few days to locate the original source disk, but I've finally done so. I uninstalled CB10 and re-installed it. After doing so, I was able to install SP3 from the link that was given. Oh, also if you do this - be sure to deactivate your key before you uninstall.

The update is at http://www.fritzserver.org/updates/cbm/c10.exe

This does indeed fix the problem.

Thankyou to Steffen and also to James Coleman for fixing the problem. If this problem does persist - it seems to for one or two users, feel free to contact Steffen : [email protected]
