So of the 150 participating only one of them is English? That's not good.

Understandable though when federations receive one paid place and have to pay for additional players. https://www.fide.com/docs/regulations/J ... 202023.pdfMJMcCready wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 6:20 amSo of the 150 participating only one of them is English? That's not good.

It is also too far away, it would have been cheaper to persuade 5 of the Mexican players to swap federations and become English. Was this option explored. I'm sure I could have got a 5 for 4 deal.

In a way it is good to not see too many English players, since it is has been a frequent complaint made against the ECF sending players on what effectively amounts to free holidays in the past at least they have shown they are willing to trim the fat and only allow the cream of the crop to represent the country again .
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

I don’t think you can characterise them as free holidays. If it’s not the Glorney Cup, they’re seriously overpriced £3000 trips for parent and child. Or they were, they may have magically come down in price now with a little more freedom not to choose the organiser’s accommodation ‘deals’.Joey Stewart wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 1:52 pmIn a way it is good to not see too many English players, since it is has been a frequent complaint made against the ECF sending players on what effectively amounts to free holidays in the past at least they have shown they are willing to trim the fat and only allow the cream of the crop to represent the country again .

Yeah, it's like a lot of these things: you're paying a premium for the chance to compete for a world title. If you're not at the level where that's a relevant consideration, you're probably better off playing three or four big Open Swisses instead.

What possessed FIDE to hold it there of all places?Geoff Chandler wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 10:07 amIt is also too far away, it would have been cheaper to persuade 5 of the Mexican players to swap federations and become English. Was this option explored. I'm sure I could have got a 5 for 4 deal.

My guess would be that they have a policy of rotating it around the continents, and it was North America's turn.

The distance between any two countries is the same in both directions.

Re: World Junior Championships 2023
It's a world championship, so should rotate.
I seem to recall that Nigel Short played in a big Junior event in Mexico. BCF booked him flights from Heathrow, so he pointed out that there were direct flights from Manchester, so how about changing them? BCF said no, so our hero got the earliest possible train from Manchester to London, met his second (Murray Chandler?) and boarded the plane at Heathrow and promptly fell asleep. He awoke as the plane was coming into land. "Are we here already?" At this point he was informed that due to a problem, the plane had diverted to, you guessed it, Manchester. Apparently, he expressed his displeasure very eloquently, and I don't blame him.

At least he still played - some chess players would probably just have refused to play.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 7:53 pmIt's a world championship, so should rotate.

They could opt out of countries where most want to leave and cross into the USA legally or otherwise, and is blighted by gangland executions and narcotics trafficking, maybe something a bit more first world in future?IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 7:33 pmMy guess would be that they have a policy of rotating it around the continents, and it was North America's turn.

Be that as it may, Mexico is a major tourist destination, so it's likely safe enough to be one of the participants in an event like this.MJMcCready wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 9:22 pmThey could opt out of countries where most want to leave and cross into the USA legally or otherwise, and is blighted by gangland executions and narcotics trafficking, maybe something a bit more first world in future?IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 7:33 pmMy guess would be that they have a policy of rotating it around the continents, and it was North America's turn.

Players from first world countries have enough of an advantage to start with without also restricting venues to them as well.MJMcCready wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 9:22 pmThey could opt out of countries where most want to leave and cross into the USA legally or otherwise, and is blighted by gangland executions and narcotics trafficking, maybe something a bit more first world in future?IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 7:33 pmMy guess would be that they have a policy of rotating it around the continents, and it was North America's turn.
