Chess photography

Post by Christopher Kreuzer » Fri Sep 15, 2023 1:25 am

There are some excellent collections of photographs from the UK chess scene (could anyone provide links, I can think of two immediately, but I am sure there are more?), but wanted to see what people know about chess photography in general. Both historical and current.

This was prompted by the following Chessbase articles I read, about the photography of Fred Lucas:

https://en.chessbase.com/post/fred-luca ... ting-chess
https://en.chessbase.com/post/from-mome ... of-calvi/1
https://en.chessbase.com/post/momentoo- ... able-light

The last two links are from 2004, and have some really nice photographs of some GMs and World Champions that look so young back then! Karjakin and Carlsen among others.

This is a very insightful article (from Albert Silver):

Some interesting bits here:

And the excellent collections of Lennart Ootes ("55.000 photos from over 175 chess events since 2013"):

What collections of UK chess photography are out there?

No.7 from https://lennartootes.com/unusual-chess-moments stood out for all the wrong reasons.

(Click on any picture on the page and the numbers are in the top left hand corner.)

Yes - No. 8 gives the impression that the young player facing us is thinking, "Come on guys - I could have reset that ten minutes ago."

We must add Brendan O'Gorman's excellent collection:

There must be more out there. Maybe on SmugMug, maybe on Flickr or other photo-hosting platforms?

If you want to see examples of current photography have a look at this gallery of shots at the Jonathan Penrose Memorial Chess Challenge and Jonathan Penrose Chess Park. Melinda Wilde specialises in chess and her photographs of junior players in particular are wonderful. Fans of MIchael Adams will see him here (the lighting in Colchester Town Hall was challenging to say the least): https://melindawildephotos.shootproof.c ... y/22501621
