Fischer- Petrosian, Buenos Aires 1971, there was a power cut. They stopped the clocks but Petrosian complained Fischer was still thinking so they re-started Bobby's clock. He did not mind. Also during that match two stink bombs were let off in the hall, Bobby asked if it was poisonous gas, they carried on playing.

Stink bombs going off happened twice in Edinburgh tournaments in the 70's and of course all eyes fell on me but I was totally innocent of that one. (however some of the moves I played often carried the stench of desperation.)

That tweet and the comments that follow remind us that interuptions to games from unreliable power supplies are still a fact of life in some parts of the world and not just a distant memory of the UK in the early 1970s.

I once turned up to a match to find all the players drunk and beer cans covering the floor. Bud Light stopped play.
