DERLD according to John B. Henderson

Post by John Upham » Wed Apr 12, 2023 10:36 pm

It would appear that John B. Henderson has become a victim of auto correction

Apparently DERLD = Delayed Exchange of the Ruy Lopez Differed

which in Fast Show style, is nice.

Make of that what you will.

A minor curiosity is that delaying the exchange to move 6 is rather more common than "only" move 5.

Presumably it is thought Black committing his Bishop to e7 in the interim makes a significant difference?

I think that was the idea. If DERLD is a possibility, playing the marginally risky move order 5. .. b5 and then 6 .. Be7 is a way to avoid it.
