Is this really surprising, though?

World Champions have had that effect in the past (notably Euwe in the Netherlands)

Very surprising to me, as In all my years of playing in, and watching coverage of the world of chess, I have never seen such a social scene as this.

Nevertheless, there is a vibrant chess bar in Oslo called The Good Knight. I made the effort to visit when I was there and played in one of their blitz tournaments. The opposition was strong but the drinks (like everywhere in Oslo) were very expensive. I did ask if Carlsen had visited and was told he has popped in on many occasions.
