Chess Tournaments Abroad.

Post by Anthony Ibbitson » Sun Feb 05, 2023 8:15 am

Hi all - What are the best tournaments to play abroad for English Chess players that aren't over 5 days long? By that I mean, the easiest to enter, preferably over a weekend and with relatively cheap accommodation etc? I've never played chess abroad so I was looking for a good starter competition that won't cost a fortune and that won't require a long time off work. Also, I don't have many games on my FIDE rating so I may need to use my ECF rating instead.

Well I would start here :

with a search for a Weekend Tournament. Luckily "Weekend" is used by quite a few languages. You will find quite a few will be Rapidplay tournaments.

The French Website (which is v good) http://www.echecs.asso.fr/ will allow a search for "weekend" but I'd look through the Compétitions - Calendrier and see where you would like to go.

Quite a few Brits are off to Iceland for the Reykjavik Open. http://chess-results.com/tnr655067.aspx ... ilen=99999 Which is 29th March to 4th April....

If you are looking specifically for a weekend event then there are lots in Ireland

They are basically all good, but just be aware hotel accommodation can be very expensive.

A few more calendars you could check for suitable events:
Most tournaments allow you to enter via their website, so are easy to enter. I wouldn't bother with anything that didn't.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I have looked at a few calendars but there's so many that's it's hard to decide what's suitable. I'm around 1750-1850 in playing strength so I was looking for something that has an under 2000 section that's also a nice location to visit which isn't too expensive. I'll have a look through the links you all kindly sent me.
