Is Lawrence Trent a tough guy?

Post by Joey Stewart » Sun Dec 11, 2022 9:50 am

He's in the main event at a chess boxing tournament later tonight so I hope so - his opponent is the sort of trash talking streamer that I think a lot of people would enjoy seeing get punched in the face but I don't really know about Lawrence and his physical prowess to say with any certainty if he has a good chance.

GM Magnus Carlsen isn't just the G.O.A.T. at chess, he's also an all-around athlete. Would you dare cheat against the world champion if you also had to climb into the ring with him?
Not that chess.com have any bias on this issue.

It’s probably a bit of a tongue in cheek competition. I think Lawrence is a lot more experienced from a boxercise point of view. I think his opponent has the look of someone who just started doing a bit of boxing the other week. I think it could all be in the so bad it’s good category.

Canadian GM Aman Hambleton.

He last played in the UK around 5 years ago

He needs to get Carlsen in the ring - saw a video on YT recently where Carlsen's opponent played a line named after Trent and Carlsen said "This is the Trent variation... named after a terrible chess player".

Hi Lawrence,

It has something to do with the London System. Here is the YouTube link Jon mentioned. Magnus says is very early. It will be an 'in' joke as Lawrence Trent is Fabiano's manager.

It may well be an in joke, but Trent ceased being Caruana's manager 6 years ago.

The undercard is about to start. It appears to be some sort of homage to Monty Python

I’m a big boxing fan and that looked fairly terrible. Lawrence just seemed to go to pot with his chin in the air asking to be hit. Aman just looked that little bit more composed. It wouldn’t be an awful idea for them to continue with it and have a rematch down the road. Their boxing baseline is so low that they can perhaps improve quickly with more work.

Ah thanks. The Jobava London is the name I've heard used for that line.

I think that's pretty par for the course with amateur boxing - I imagine most people fancy they could get in a ring and throw some punches but seeing this it makes you realise just how well trained and honed the professional game is, and certainly not something you could expect to master in a few months of training. I think it would almost be easier to teach a pro boxer a solid chess defence and then easily knock the master out then it would be for a chess master to get really good at boxing.
