Weekend FT front page chess article
I realise this item comes under Media Comments on Chess, but it is so well written that I think it deserves its own thread. Judge for yourself.

That link took me to a page trying to sell me an FT subscription. Is this the link you meant?Leonard Barden wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 12:38 pmI realise this item comes under Media Comments on Chess, but it is so well written that I think it deserves its own thread. Judge for yourself.

Re: Weekend FT front page chess article
It keeps hitting a pay wall. I would suggest typing the title into a search engine and getting in that way.
It is a fantastic read though, casting chess in an almost mystical light almost away from everything going on in the world. The author eating Chess.com's pizza did make me chuckle.

Can someone cut and paste the article here, I don't like the times pathetic and desperate attempts to scrounge money out of readers so that might learn them a lesson!
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

More likely to result in the forum being learnt a lesson.Joey Stewart wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 2:16 pmCan someone cut and paste the article here, I don't like the times pathetic and desperate attempts to scrounge money out of readers so that might learn them a lesson!

I followed Stephen's suggestion of entering "Enter the inner sanctum of elite chess" into Google and was able to access the article from the search results.Joey Stewart wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 2:16 pmCan someone cut and paste the article here, I don't like the times pathetic and desperate attempts to scrounge money out of readers so that might learn them a lesson!

"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Of course, it might instead result in an action for breach of copyright for anyone brave, or fool, enough to risk pasting it here. Much safer is to foIIow the suggestion to use a search engine.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 2:26 pmI followed Stephen's suggestion of entering "Enter the inner sanctum of elite chess" into Google and was able to access the article from the search results.Joey Stewart wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 2:16 pmCan someone cut and paste the article here, I don't like the times pathetic and desperate attempts to scrounge money out of readers so that might learn them a lesson!

That may explain why the trick of using Google to search for the headline usually works.

Hi Joey,
Far too long and probably illegal. See above or tinker with the cookie settings to get in.
That goes for anyone else who wants a good well written read.
Leonard was correct in isolating it
When mentioning the Ruy Lopez, Morphy Defence, Marshall Gambit the writer, Oliver Roeder, adds;
Chess players, like taxonomists, love to name things.'
That reminded me that there is a 'Taxidermy Chess Set' a chess set made up of dead stuffed rodents.
(is there anything that has not been turned into a chess set?)

The piece, by the way, is indeed very good.

Re: Weekend FT front page chess article
Mention of chess.com reminds me that it was not so long ago that FIDE (or Agon at least) were fighting chess.com, chess24 etc in any Court that would listen over the rights to coverage of Candidates and World Championships.Stephen Westmoreland wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 1:37 pmThe author eating Chess.com's pizza did make me chuckle.
It's far more sensible for FIDE to partner its intermittent prestige events with chess sites already giving 24/7 coverage than set up in oppossition to them.

Absolutely. Those sites are really good for commentary.

Re: Weekend FT front page chess article
I thought my reasonable compromise, that Agon have exclusive rights to cover the White moves and chess.com to cover the Black, was rather summarily dismissed
