Provided you had not already made an illegal move, you could have simply put the pawn on the promotion square and started the opponent's clock.
Alternatively could you move the pawn to the eighth, say queen and hit the stop button on the clock? Given that one uses the start stop button at both the start and end of the game, surely the player should know where it is?

It's never really bothered me when an opponent has grabbed a queen during a pawn race.

You might need a spare Knight if anyone plays the Albin,

I once saw that game unfolding at Barnstaple Chess Club, and lurked near the board with a black knight in my pocket in case it was needed. It was.

I've never understood why white falls for that trap - even if you don't see the underpromotion tactic it would still look like a pretty ugly position to play if black simply traded queens and then took the Knight.
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

A conjecture would be that White thinks a piece can be taken with Bxb4 without realising that after exf2 check, it isn't possibl;e to recapture on f2 without immediately losing the queen.
