Audio Chess

Post by John Upham » Wed Mar 23, 2022 5:27 pm

Recently I unearthed materials relating to the wonderful Audio Chess created by innovator Michael Basman.

Perhaps these stir some memories for you?

Hi John,

I'm sure I still have a couple knocking about somewhere. I definitely had 'Bashing the Benko'.

The Audiochess.com domain is up for sale

https://audiochess.com/chess/index.php? ... ductId=206

John Moore mentions them here:

viewtopic.php?f=25&t=6728&hilit=Hooper+ ... 75#p141864

"...an excellent one by David Hooper on Rook endings which is still a great introduction for the club and county player.
I also remember David, who passed away many years ago, ending the first side of the cassette by saying
"Now you will have to turn the record over""

Which I find rather charming.

Others after that post share a few Audio Chess memories.

I had this idea of taking one of the more interesting tapes, digitizing the audio and then creating a YouTube video using the audio and overlaying a video of the positions being discussed using the ChessBase Media system. I could also throw some images of the player(s) talking on the audio tapes.

I think this would be a fun thing to do and help to keep these tapes alive.

I suspect not many people these days have the facility to listen to a Philips style audio cassette first developed in 1963!
