FIDE does have a dress code now but exactly when that came into effect I can't remember and what triggered, if anything, triggered it is another matter.
Nigel Short once got into trouble with a dress code and it led to the headline "Short's shorts too short"
That may well have been the 1985 Interzonal?

In his defence there, it was played in ludicrously hot conditions and many of the other players at least sympathised with him.

Maybe - I was there (Biel). No, not in the interzonal, a lower section. It was very hot, and many players were dressed more for the beach than a chess tournament.

Same year, similar event, but it may have been the Montpelier Candidates.

I seem to recall the lead complainer about Nigel's attire being Campomanes, which may have helped lead to the breakaway in 1993.
