Yes, although someone was presumably unaware of a distinguished third brother, Oliver, not to mention sister Shirley.

Don't forget father Lionel Sharples and various other well-known family members.Roger Lancaster wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 10:00 amYes, although someone was presumably unaware of a distinguished third brother, Oliver, not to mention sister Shirley.
Jules mentioned in the VIP room at the London Chess Classic that he was keen to find a connection with Shirley Hodgson as well as his paternal connection with Judge Jeffries.

Re: Calls made for road to be named after Colchester brothers
It would be great if Colchester Council rose to the occasion and call it 'Penrose Road to Reality'
Roger Penrose wrote 'Road to Reality' ( A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe)
If what ever they call it goes ahead It will be another addition to Edward Winters piece on street names and chess players.
https://www.chesshistory.com/winter/extra/streets.html
Are there any streets in the UK with solid a chess connection. There is a place, the exact where escapes me
that has named it's streets and avenues after chess pieces.
Staunton Street in London is named after Sir George Staunton (1781-1859).

Re: Calls made for road to be named after Colchester brothers
There are many streets with 'castle' in the name and it is also not hard to find ones with King, Queen, Bishop and Knight too but I don't think the humble pawn gets a lot of press.
Penrose Street has a nice sound to it, kind of upmarket.

Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

Absolutely.
And it would be nice to have roads named for the right reasons (i.e some distinction in lives), not just after corrupt local councillors.

Do you have anyone specific in mind here
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Was it named to commemorate the 1945 Yalta Conference?Colin Purdon wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 1:22 pm

No, the road was built in 1948 as a tribute to the Battle of Stalingrad. It's been an ongoing battle in Colchester as well. Residents in other roads nearby want the name changed but the residents in Stalin Road will fight tooth and nail to keep it despite the road having 70% fewer house sales than other roads in the area.John Upham wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 1:41 pmWas it named to commemorate the 1945 Yalta Conference?Colin Purdon wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 1:22 pm

My reason for the suggestion was based on the adjoining roads:Chris Rice wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 2:24 pmNo, the road was built in 1948 as a tribute to the Battle of Stalingrad. I'm not sure whether it was specifically to commemorate Yalta or generally to honour these wartime leaders (as you mention Churchill and Roosevelt have adjacent roads named after them).John Upham wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 1:41 pmWas it named to commemorate the 1945 Yalta Conference?Colin Purdon wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 1:22 pm

Re: Calls made for road to be named after Colchester brothers
Hi John,
Before my post I did some surfing about trying to find the place that has named it's streets after chess pieces.
(I have an awful feeling I have either been there or have mentioned it before.)
During the search I hit Knightrider street. It appears to have been named in the 1300's.
see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knightrider_Street.
Yes Penrose Street sounds very posh.
Try this. Ask any teenager who is Nelson's Column named after. See how many say Nelson Mandela.
(it's Harry Pillsbury )
And do not forget there is a Chandler Crescent in Edinburgh. I've nicked the sign and nailed it to my sitting room wall.
