Thanks for the plug! There are a lot of girls at Niamh’s age group, or just above or just below really bubbling along nicely. I think a few years down the line one or more of them will make up the new blood of the Woman’s Olympiad team. Fingers crossed for that!

You are right. We have strong women players - it is a question, if they can play or not - IM Houska, WGM Toma, IM Ciuksyte, WIM Maroroa etc.
But as you write, we have also strong young players , who could immediately cover the empty spaces . 2022 chess calendar is full of challenging opportunities for talented girls . We must give opportunity to strong girls. So example European Women Championship is not for women only. Strong girls of each age takes part in it, because you need to develop young talent as soon as possible. Age of new WIM title holder in Europe
is less than 18 years . Girls are able do this performance, also ours. It is a question of opportunities to train and to play.

Do we even know that they can get time off school to play overseas ( whether or not they are actually teaching )?
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a QR code stamped on a human face — forever.

It's a case by case, depending on the school, headteacher and the general level of the junior (easier to get an exemption if you are an A student rather than an F). Also the parents' approach to the chess Vs school equation is important.

The real questions become then the cost, and if there are any looming exams.

If you want to look a bit further into the future, young Elis Dicen won the U10 Terafinal earlier in the month - the first girl to win one of their mixed categories.

An interesting study by the charity Woman in Sport probably has a reasonable amount of chess overlap. They estimate over a million girls give up sport in their early teens. They surveyed over 4000 girls and the main conclusion from the article appears to be;

“We must bust the myth that teenage girls drop out of sport simply because their priorities change. Our research has found that 59% of teenage girls who used to be sporty like competitive sport, but they’re being failed due to early years stereotyping, inadequate opportunities and a complete dearth of knowledge about managing female puberty.

“Teenage girls are not voluntarily leaving sport, they are being pushed out as a consequence of deep-rooted gender stereotypes.

“We must all do more to reverse this trend and not continue to accept this as inevitable.”

Thank you for this article. Although chess is not a sport in England and some factors in it are special for sports disciplines in terms of physical activity. But we can see this problem generally as abandoning any activity by teenagers.

From my last post - Juniors under 18 with ECF 1900 + ( November 2021) - top 2 seeds A.Somton and N.Jaufarally have not more activity in the ECF records. Both girls are ECF 2000 + what says about a high talent both of them ?!

It will be probably necessary to look at MOTIVATION and SUPPORT in general. Both are essential for any talent growth, especially female ones. But as you see from girls under 18 ECF over 1900 table, we have strong ENG chess girls talents.

And when we speak about the support of youth chess talents. l received an information, that transfer fee for transfer a former Russian female player to ECF ( FIDE web writes 500 eur) who did not play no one FIDE rated game last 15 years was paid by ECF, if this information is true, of course. Correct me if that's not true.

They are in their GCSE year so I don't expect either to play until the summer.
