Dortmund Sparkassen + NC Masters

A high level tournament as always. But I am most interested in the 4 game match between Anand and Kramnik. Classical time controls. No castling allowed.

"No castling allowed."

OK - I'll bite - "Why?"

I believe it is one of the chess variants that are proven to produce less draws as the kings are more exposed on average.
It also kills opening theory (like 960) and players can argue that it is more based on calculation and positional skills rather than opening knowledge.

Vlad has been testing a few variants to try and see if you can have something like normal chess but with fewer draws; he settled on this one, and I think computers have tried it too

This is now a further test, a bit of fun too

Pete Doggers
The idea for this match originates from DeepMind's latest paper, co-written by Kramnik, in which the self-learning chess engine AlphaZero was used to explore the design of different variants of the game of chess with different sets of rules. One of the variants discussed—many of which you can try on Chess.com yourself!—was No Castling. DeepMind also supported the match between Anand and Kramnik and plans to sponsor the event next year as well.
