Re: Shortest legitimate games

I won a league game as Black with 1. e4 e5 2. f4 d5 3. fe5 Qh4+
My opponent resigned just as a few late comers were arriving.

A rarely known OTB trap I've used with success is:

'The Blue Capped Pawn'.

I sat down at the board at an Allegro in 1984 and on one of my White Pawns
someone had taken a felt tipped pen to it and coloured the top of it blue!

So I tried to swap it with George Coutts who was sitting next to me.
He refused, then I tried to swap it another board but they too refused.

George said just put it on e4 and sac it.

So I did and my opponent walked into a wonderful trap. (I believe it is called the Estrin Trap.)

G.Chandler - H.Choudary, Edinburgh Allegro 1984

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Nd5!?

Black took the 'Blue Capped Pawn.'

Here is my quickest OTB win -

The funny thing is that 7.Nxe4 is actually a mistake, since 7.d3 simply wins a piece.

And my quickest defeat (I should really have resigned at move 6) -

Heh, were you planning 6...Bc6?

(Your other game reminds me of this.)

Not really, minatures are likely to be rather longer than individuals' given shortest games

For this, wouldn't it be easier to read this?

It's a long time ago, but yes, I think ...Bc6 was probably the plan.

I had a game as black that began

and I went on to win. Seeing as my opponent was graded over 200, 30 points higher than me, I thought it would be impolite to point out that 5. e4 wins a piece, and for all I know he is still none the wiser.

As white against the Falkbeer, I have had (against a moderately weak club player, but certainly not a beginner) 1e4 e5 2 f4 d5 3 ed5 Qd5?! 4 Nc3 Qc6 (I mean, *why* exactly????) and 5 Bb5. And it really *should* have been 1-0, but - out of sheer embarrassment I suspect - they played a dozen more moves.

Obviously not involving me, but worth throwing into the mix here:

Zapata vs Anand (yes, that Anand) 1988

1. e4 e5. 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. Nc3 Bf5?? 6. Qe2 resigns

Bf5 was given as a good move in the previous edition of Informator

I presume you know the back story behind that one?

Indeed; that following the moves from a previous pre-arranged draw is not a good idea in terms of accuracy of moves played.

I've had this one in the South Wales International:

Sadly, my opponent was unrated, so I didn't gain any rating points from it.
